Must Have Running Gear

Running is the most universal sport, & it doesn't take much to get started. All you need is a pair of shoes, & you're ready to go! Over the years, I've picked up some gear that helps me to stay cool, run faster, safer & more comfortably.

Nike SF Giants Adjustable Dri-Fit Hat I always wear this hat because I can't stand having the sun in my eyes while I'm running. I usually wear a sweatband underneath to keep the sweat off my face. I'm sure it comes in a huge range of colors (& sports teams, Go Giants!), but the adjustable strap makes it easy to fit everyone.

R-Gear 10 oz Handy Hydrator This hand bottle is great for longer runs, though it can be cumbersome to hold it the entire time. The strap has a little pocket, great for keys or energy gummies. Sometimes I just strap it onto my reflector belt if I don't want to hold it during my run.

Vinyl Glow Belt Reflective materials are very important for night running, & this glow belt widely used by military personnel during training. I prefer to run early morning or late dusk, & the neon yellow reflective material keeps vehicles & bicyclists aware of runners.

Polar T31 Heart Rate Monitor I don't always use this HRM for every run, but it's beneficial to manipulate your heart rate during high intensity training. It's also great for cross training, such as weights or kickboxing, to see how many calories you are actually burning.

Road ID Wrist ID Slim An emergency contact/identification bracelet is a great accessory for lone runners & outdoor athletes. This one is a silicone bracelet with a metal plate engraved with my name, my hometown, and two emergency contact numbers. You can customize your plate to say anything you want; some people add inspirational quotes, & I've seen others that include their blood type. It fits snug, but still feels comfortable while running. Accidents are very possible, especially when you're alone, & this is a helpful tool in case of an emergency.

Nike Air Pegasus 27 (Link is for the newest Nike Air Pegasus 30 since the 27 has been discontinued) These Nike's were my tried & true running shoes for well over 500 miles. They are neutral for flexibility, great for supinators like myself. It is also compatible with Nike , Nike's running app that tracks your runs.

Nike Free Run 2 ASICS Gel Cumulus 14 I originally got the Nike Free Run 2 as a gym shoe, but started using them for short distance runs when my Pegasus' gave out. I've grown to love how lightweight they are, but they don't do much for cushioning or stability. My newest running shoes are the ASICS Gel Cumulus 14. This one is also neutral, yet more structured than the Free Runs. It is substantially more bulky, but I'm getting used to them now that they are more broken in.

Yurbuds Ironman Armband for iPod/iPhone Sony Sweat-Proof Active Earbuds These are pretty self-explanatory. This armband is pretty standard, but this one has a handy key pocket, though I rarely ever use it. I highly recommend sweat-proof headphones since I have short circuited many an iPod headphone set in my experiences!

Adidas Compression Calf Sleeve Compression sleeves & socks are great for circulation during & after long distance runs. I prefer the sleeves so I can wear running socks geared more towards dryness & blister prevention.
In terms of apparel, I will promote anything Dri-Fit til the end of my days! Synthetic fabrics wick sweat away from the body; cotton will just absorb all of that moisture & weigh you down. It is also more comfortable for full flexibility & friction reduction.
I'm a huge fan of the Nike brand. They may not do the best by means of running shoes & they are more expensive compared to other brands, but their apparel is top quality & my Nike gear has lasted for years. Top tip: shop the Nike Outlets! They come out with so many prints & styles that go on clearance at the end of every season. Same great quality at lower prices! Sleek & tight is the best way to go when training to increase speed, flexibility & comfort. Below are some links to my favorites.

Fueling up pre & post workouts can be a whole post on its own, but here are the energy boosts I use during & after my runs to replenish & rehydrate:

Mio Fit Water Enhancer (Replenishes electrolytes & sodium)
GU Energy Gels (Maintains glucose levels for optimum energy during runs)
Honey Stinger Organic Energy Chews (Gives a quick energy boost during runs)
Isopure Zero Carb Protein (Rebuilds broken down muscles after long runs)
Ovaltine (Yes, chocolate milk! Provides glucose & proteins for recovery, great alternative if you don't take protein powders)

My runners out there, what are your favorite running essentials?
