Rimmel Mattes & Glitters

The end of 2014 saw Rimmel London add to their ever growing nail polish line with a collection of 5 velvet mattes and 5 clear based glitter toppers.

First, the matte polishes.

‘Matte-itude’ is a two coater smooth matter that was lovely to apply.

Two coats of ‘Midnight Kiss’ – I really quite like this colour, it’s quite a classic blue.

‘Purple Opulence’ is a great mid toned purple, and stays safely away from the berry tones. Two coats.

‘Sumptuous Red’ is actually more of a berry colour, but again, two easy coats.

‘Velvet Touch’

And now the glitters

‘Midnight Mistletoe’, granted I missed the festive season for this one! But I like the balance of red to green and distribution is easy to work with.

‘Bedazzle’ – if you’ve been lusting after the fun Polka.com by OPI then this is a more affordable alternative.

‘Disco Diva’ I know where I’ve seen you before…I just can’t place you! Nice and delicate though

‘Bling Thing’ is not my cup of tea at all. I find stars a pain in the bum to fish out, place and I don’t like the look. This was no exception sadly, but if stars are your thing, it might be up your alley.

‘Disco Fever’ is a great square glitter with no pesky little glitter bits getting in the way of this being used for some cool square glitter placement designs.

Formula wise the polishes are all good drugstore quality, in fact the mattes in particular are quite impressive for the price range given the patchy, uneven finish of many mattes. The glitters were OK, with Disco Fever having the best single coat, even coverage, though Bling Thing required a lot of fishing for the stars.

I keep asking for Rimmel to do something interesting with their nail range, and yes these are new effects for Rimmel, but we’ve seen all of these before. It’s nice that they’re available in an affordable drugstore range, but they’ve got a way to go before I think I’ll feel genuinely thrilled by their polish. Affordable, reliable and accessible but nothing spectacular. Perhaps 2015 will be the year that I finally say ‘Have you seen that new Rimmel polish, you have to get it…’
