the art of embracing imperfection

There is nothing more soul destroying than the quest for perfection. Mainly because it is an impossible quest but also because it's just stupid. Nobody, nothing, not one thing in this world is perfect and that is the joy of life, my theory is that we are here to be imperfect, that is our 'real' quest, to embrace imperfection and be silly and crappy and mucky and messy.

I haven't always felt this way. When I was younger I wanted so badly to be 'perfect' and 'cute' and 'normal', now the thought of being normal makes me want to vomit but there was a time when average was my highest ideal. It makes no sense but then so many things about being young is baffling to older me.

Here are some things to remember if you too are guilty of trying to be perfect.

// you are already perfect // you don't need to do anything, change anything or try to be something that you're not. You are just bloody brilliant as you are.

// your job here is to be imperfect // so embrace it. Go on. Be a grub, stay in bed, do not iron your shirt, I dare you.

// imperfection is beauty // the Japanese call this wabi-sabi, the beauty in the imperfection, the impermanence of life. I say let's take a leaf out of their book and embrace our imperfections, they are what make us unique and beautiful.

// allowing imperfection releases you // it's tiring you know, trying to be perfect all the bloody time. Give up on all that trying and you'll feel like a million dollars, I promise.

// perfection is boring // I mean really boring. life should be full of quirks and dirt and unmade beds. Go on, live a little, stick two fingers up at the perfection squad.

Are you a perfectionist? Do you find the whole thing a bit tiresome?
