Simple DIY St. Patrick’s Day Floral Centrepiece

Hello you lovely Pretty Providence readers! Colleen here- mama of twins and lifestyle blogger over at Lemon Thistle (home to DIY, Parties, Home Decor, & of course babies!). Saint Patrick’s Day is fast approaching and for the first time ever, I’ve gotten in the spirit! I’ve been sharing ideas for a Saint Patrick’s Day Party like mad over on my blog, and I thought I’d share this simple DIY St Patrick’s Day Floral Centrepiece here with you! I’ve quite honestly never decorated for the holiday, or given it much thought because I’d never seen any decorations that I liked for the holiday! Growing up, we had some leprechaun window clings and that was the extent of it- classy? Probably not, but fun as a kid. Now that I have a family of my own, I want them to remember holidays as something special so I’ve been making an effort. This floral centrepiece is minimal effort, frugal (one of my requirements), and it even brings a bit of class to this holiday!

I’ve actually gotten more compliments on this centrepiece (which hangs out on my kitchen island- we hardly use our table) than I expected. I often have flowers in my home and they never receive this much attention!

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:

  • 1 Bunch of White Mums (available at the grocery florist)
  • 1 Bunch of White Tulips (also available at the grocery florist)
  • Gold Vase
  • Green Glitter
  • Scissors
  • Green Feathers

Start by filling your vase with clean water. My vase is actually an old candle container I cleaned the wax out of- but I’ve spotted similar vases at Target. By ignoring floral foam, this arrangement is so speedy to put together! Next, trim all your leaves off your flowers. I love greenery in arrangements, but mums don’t have the nicest leaves, and the green of the tulips is different from the kelly green colour of the feathers and glitter I was adding in. Once the stems are all cleaned up, cut them to length with scissors taking care to cut on an angle.

Begin adding stems of mums to the vase as pictured- with the heads around the edge of the vase, and the stems ending on the opposite side of the vase (creating a web in the vase). This ‘web’ will help all the other flowers stay in place. Finish filling in all the mums before adding the tulips at random places in the ‘pouff’ of mums. I like to put two together and space the rest out to get a random look.

You could stop here, but I added in some green feathers (which seems to be everyone’s favourite part) and some green glitter. The feathers came from a dollar store craft pack, and so did the glitter. Place the feathers in randomly as well- again, I like to place a couple bunches to keep it from looking too perfectly spaced out. Next, sprinkle glitter generously over the whole arrangement. I used two different types of glitter. It looks like a ton of glitter- before you blow it off! By blowing the glitter off the flowers, it settles into the base of the petals for a more subtle look.

See how the glitter gets stuck in the base of the flower petals? Much better than piled on top! How easy is that? I love having flowers in the house (even for no occasion) but my budget limits me to grocery store florals- I love that by getting a bit creative these frugal flowers can look so festive!

So tell me- do you decorate or do anything for St. Patrick’s Day? I’d love to hear what you do to make it special for your family! Also… grocery store flowers! Do you use them? I’d love to hear your favourite ways to make them beautiful.
