A Big Girl Room for Jaye

At some point this year, Jaye moved from a crib to her new big girl bed. Which meant no more nursery and time for her own Big Girl Room. At some point after finishing her room, I got around to taking pictures. And now, at an even later some point, I’m sharing them here. Without any further delay, Jaye’s Pink and Aqua Big Girl Room!

The inspiration for her room was the Children at Play Balloon Fabric from Michael Miller. I used it for her curtains, but since I still wanted blackout curtains, I actually used her old blackout curtains to create a liner for the new curtains. It worked pretty well, but was also tricky to sew and the bottom is a little bubbly, like a bubble skirt.
We painted the ceiling aqua which is one of my favorite extra touches. We went with a twin size white iron bed. I like that it’s classic and would go with any room style, but it’s also simple and clean-lined enough to be modern.
Her quilt is pink on one side and aqua on the other. The perfect solution for her pink and aqua big girl room. I love using quilts rather than duvets, because duvets are a PITA. I love the look of the threaded detailing, but honestly, it hasn’t held up super well to a rambunctious preschooler and a cockapoo who’s favorite perch is on Jaye’s bed staring out the window.
On the other side of her bed is the reading corner. I painted the ubiquitous Ikea spice shelves in three different shades of pink and Phil painstakingly hung them in stairsteps. Now that she’s older and doesn’t nap anymore, she spends her “naptime” reading in her room, so the shelves are perfect to store some books in here. Honestly, she never sits on the bean bag chair since the bed is the preferred reading spot. Favorite books right now: The Three Cabritos
, Gerald and Piggie books
, and Alfie books
.
Some new artwork is still needed elsewhere in the room, but both Jaye and I love this cool shark pallet sign I made at a fun Cricut blogger party. Jaye loves her new big girl room. She showed it off to everyone who came into the house for weeks after we finished it.
