Movie Review: The Worst Year of My Life

Coming to the Arena Cinema in Hollywood, CA tomorrow is the film The Worst Year of My Life. The film will be available on Video on Demand in the near future as well.

The film stars Trevor St. John David (Kyle), Amy Vorpahl (Amber), Cate Beehan (Jennifer) and Nicholas Tucci (Todd).

Raw and relatable, The Worst Year of My Life is a comedic drama about Kyle, a down-on-his-luck romantic, who, one week before proposing to his girlfriend Amber, discovers that she’s been sleeping with another man. Unemployed, saddled with debt, and depressed, Kyle embarks on a funny yet affecting journey to recovery that involves living in his car, bottom-of-the-barrel jobs, therapy, online dating, and Kyle’s own wild, fantastical, and snarky imagination.

The second feature film from writer/director Jonathan Smith, The Worst Year of My Life deploys any and every narratively adventurous technique imaginable as it anatomizes a three year relationship from its euphoric inception to its unfortunate end, ultimately detailing the painful but universally relatable process of letting go.

An official selection at the Dances With Films 2014 film festival, Orlando Film Festival 2014, and New Filmmakers New York Fall 2014, The Worst Year of My Life opens theatrically on February 13th, 2015 for a week-long engagement at the Arena Cinema in Hollywood, CA.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this film. I wasn’t sure if it was comedy, a drama or a romantic film. I guess you can say it was all three rolled into one.

I have to agree with the film’s synopsis. I found the film to be very relatable to some degree. I think many people will be able to relate to Kyle and his situation. I think many people, including myself, have had some kind of experience with a relationship that you assumed was going to last a lifetime and how it suddenly takes a turn for the worse.

Like Kyle, I was in a long term relationship (prior to my hubby) for six years until I found out he was being unfaithful. Like Kyle I felt lost and didn’t know what to do. Thankfully my life didn’t go to the extreme that Kyle’s did, but the feeling of being lost and not knowing what to do I can relate to.

The character of Kyle is very likable and you “feel” for him and his situation. You will find yourself rooting for him and hoping that he finds happiness in the end.

Sadly I didn’t like the character of Amber from the start. There was something about her I didn’t trust. It wasn’t until the movie had been playing for a bit that my suspicions about her were verified.

This film is billed as a comedy. Sadly I didn’t laugh too much (I giggled a few times). I mostly saw it as a drama and perhaps even a romance film (to some degree).

The film is sad at times – not so sad that you need a box of tissues – but it will pull on your heart strings.

I truly enjoyed the film. I would watch it again. I actually watched it by myself thinking it wasn’t my husband’s “cup of tea” but I would watch it again with him because I think he would enjoy it too.
