Make Your Own DIY Terrarium

Making your own DIY terrarium is both fun and easy. Suited for any skill level, these cute terrariums make lovely home accents as well as thoughtful homemade gift ideas. You can find all the supplies you need with a little hunting. I found my sheet moss romping through the neighborhood after a rainy day while the remaining ingredients were discovered at my local craft and pet stores.

What you need:

glass jar
sheet moss
rocks
aquarium sand
dirt from the great outdoors
aquarium charcoal
craft miniatures

What to do:

Start with a clean jar – I used bail jars in two different sizes that I found at Joanne’s for $1 and $1.49 each – and begin by putting a one inch layer of rocks in the bottom. Follow with a thin layer of charcoal to help keep your terrarium free of bacterial growth then add a thin layer of sand and then your soil. Top with sheet moss.

Now add your decorations. You can choose just about any miniature decorations you like. I found these tiny mushrooms in the floral department of the craft store.

Now mist your new DIY terrarium lightly with water and close the lid of the jar. And that’s it!

You can also add live garden snails to your terrarium for a more interesting eco-system. I actually thought I was adding empty snail shells to my DIY terrarium but it turned out they weren’t dead after all! After misting with water and sealing the terrarium I suddenly had two live snails crawling about my DIY terrarium the next day. Pretty neat, right? Especially since the shells had been sitting on my kitchen window sill for months.
