Friday Pieday – Riley and Baking

My sweet friend, Rebekah, over at A bit of sunshine, does the most wonderful series called Friday Piedays.

When I saw her post about Derby Pie, it immediately took me back to my nanny’s house in Mansfield, Texas. I can remember eating Derby Pie and loving every bite. I can remember clearly standing in her bright kitchen looking out at the pecan trees. I can remember her back pantry that was the size of a bedroom, that hid her piano and all her jazz music. I can remember the built in breakfast nook that only the adults were allowed to sit at. I can remember the dining room next door that always had at least three pies on the table. (Usually these were pecan, peach, and chocolate). I can remember the little dishes of ribbon candy that sat around the house. I can remember Sunday afternoons and watching the Dallas Cowboys with my dad sprawled out on the floor.

Riley and I decided we needed to make the pie right away and headed to the store for the ingredients we were missing.

This little guy – he loves to bake! He loves to measure and pour and count. It makes it so much fun.

I think the kitchen might be some of our best times together right now. He loves seeing what happens when you stir and pour and bake. He gets so excited to show daddy, Julia, and Nate what we made that day.

I didn’t take any pictures of the finished product – you’ll have to go over to Rebekah’s blog for that and the recipe!

We finished that pie in two days and the kids are already asking me to make it again. It was amazing.
