South Baltimore Business Roundup

Construction Begins at the Pabst Castle

The Pabst Castle, originally a bottling plant for the Pabst Brewing Company, at 1834 S. Charles St. in South Baltimore has been on quite a ride since Maryland Glass & Mirror relocated to Carroll-Camden almost 10 years ago. There was a plan that never came to fruition for a restaurant to transfer Baja Beach Club’s former liquor license to the location; proposals for a brewery and pub, which gained approval, but never ended up happening as the team later decided they needed more space and found a building in Dundalk; and, in 2014, a sale of the building to a group looking to renovate the castle for boutique office space.

Restoration work was completed on the exterior of the castle in 2013 and 2014, and yesterday a construction crew began setting up for a renovation of the building. SouthBMore.com will report once tenants have been named.

Demolition Begins at Stadium Square

Construction is in full bloom around South Baltimore as in recent weeks work has started at Port Covington, Anthem House, and the proposed Stadium Square development. Developer Caves Valley Partners has begun the demolition of former Baltimore Tool Works on the 1100 block of Race St. and demolition will soon take place at the former Furst Bros. on the 1200 block of Leadenhall St.

Arsh Mirmiran of Caves Valley Partners told the Baltimore Business Journal:

“We got complaints early on from people who were saying there were vagrants hanging around there,” Mirmiran said. “As buildings become vacant there, we’ll sort of methodically take them down because we know regardless of the final plan, the buildings standing there aren’t part of the plan.”

Stadium Square still has to go through architectural approvals and Caves Valley Partners is hoping to begin construction on the first apartment building in the fall. They are hoping to lure a grocery store to the development.

$290 Million Investment Coming to Port Covington in 2015?

Work has been underway by James G. Davis Construction Corporation since the beginning of February to convert the former Sam’s Club at the Port Covington shopping center into a space for Under Armour. The Baltimore Business Journal is reporting that a Securities and Exchange Commission filing from Under Armour details big plans for a headquarters expansion:

The filing also references the need for Under Armour to spend money on accommodating the company’s rapid growth in Baltimore, saying it plans to spend $290 million in 2015 on “expansion of our corporate headquarters” in addition to retail stores and a North American distribution center.

With Kevin Plank’s development company Sagamore Development Co. LLC purchasing more than $90 million of Port Covington real estate totaling more than 128 acres, it should be a big 2015 for the southern tip of the South Baltimore peninsula.

Port of Baltimore Sets Records

Just down the shoreline from Port Covington, the Port of Baltimore had another huge year in 2014. It was the top automobile port in the United States for the fourth year in a row, breaking its own record by handling 792,795 automobiles.

In overall cargo, The Port of Baltimore ranked 13th nationally in tonnage shipped and 9th in total value.

GoFundMe for LP Steamers Employee

A GoFundMe campaign, called Jared’s Road to Recovery, has been set up for an employee of LP Steamers. From the campaign:

Jared is one of our beloved employees at LP Steamers. He has the biggest heart and would do anything for anyone. On Feb. 13th Jared fell and suffered a traumatic head injury. This news is all very devastating to us. It’s going to be a long road to recovery for him and the bills are racking up. His injury was so severe that he will be out of work for a while so any little bit helps. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers and thank you for your support.

Legend-Doggy Designs Founded in South Baltimore

SouthBMore.com recently learned about a pet-focused company, Legend-Doggy Designs, founded locally by South Baltimore resident Chrissy Eckert. About the company:

Legend-Doggy Designs is here to keep your four-legged family members warm and stylish!

Dogs get cold too! Our dog clothing is inspired by our rescue pup, a hairless Chinese Crested named Neil Patrick Hairless. We started crafting stylish and WARM outfits for his first chilly Baltimore winter – using nice, soft, high quality fleece that covers all four legs and the entire back, with an open bottomside so Neil doesn’t have to take them off to go outside. Friends have asked for us to make some for their dog – and their cats – so we decided to share with the world

We make the outfits to order and will have some in stock as well. If you have anything in mind, just ask!
