Demolition Begins at Stadium Square
Construction is in full bloom around South Baltimore as in recent weeks work has started at Port Covington, Anthem House, and the proposed Stadium Square development. Developer Caves Valley Partners has begun the demolition of former Baltimore Tool Works on the 1100 block of Race St. and demolition will soon take place at the former Furst Bros. on the 1200 block of Leadenhall St.
Arsh Mirmiran of Caves Valley Partners told the Baltimore Business Journal:
“We got complaints early on from people who were saying there were vagrants hanging around there,” Mirmiran said. “As buildings become vacant there, we’ll sort of methodically take them down because we know regardless of the final plan, the buildings standing there aren’t part of the plan.”
Stadium Square still has to go through architectural approvals and Caves Valley Partners is hoping to begin construction on the first apartment building in the fall. They are hoping to lure a grocery store to the development.
$290 Million Investment Coming to Port Covington in 2015?
Work has been underway by James G. Davis Construction Corporation since the beginning of February to convert the former Sam’s Club at the Port Covington shopping center into a space for Under Armour. The Baltimore Business Journal is reporting that a Securities and Exchange Commission filing from Under Armour details big plans for a headquarters expansion:
The filing also references the need for Under Armour to spend money on accommodating the company’s rapid growth in Baltimore, saying it plans to spend $290 million in 2015 on “expansion of our corporate headquarters” in addition to retail stores and a North American distribution center.
With Kevin Plank’s development company Sagamore Development Co. LLC purchasing more than $90 million of Port Covington real estate totaling more than 128 acres, it should be a big 2015 for the southern tip of the South Baltimore peninsula.
Port of Baltimore Sets Records
Just down the shoreline from Port Covington, the Port of Baltimore had another huge year in 2014. It was the top automobile port in the United States for the fourth year in a row, breaking its own record by handling 792,795 automobiles.
In overall cargo, The Port of Baltimore ranked 13th nationally in tonnage shipped and 9th in total value.
