Is Your Va-Jay-Jay “Normal”?

Over the past decade pubic hair has become somewhat of an endangered species. While this may be good news for waxers, the downside is that we’ve all become more self-conscious of our, ahem . . . lady bits.

But it’s not just the hair we’re worried about. There’s been a real increase in the number of women lining up for labiaplasties – the operation that involves changing the appearance of the vulva.

Melbourne-based GP, Magda Simonis told The ABC that: “The removal of pubic hair is becoming so much more common, in fact in the Y Generation it’s probably 80 per cent, so removing the pubic hair has played a big part in this discovery of self.”

“The standard that is mostly sought after is one of a neat, single slit and nothing hanging out. Now the reality is, that 50 per cent of women have labia minora that extend beyond the margin of the labia majora,” says Dr Simonis.

This confusion and misconception around what is “normal” prompted Women’s Health Victoria to launch The Labia Library, a website where you can see what a “normal” vulva really looks like.

So if you’ve ever wondered if your vagina is “normal” then take a look at The Labia Library – there’s even a photo gallery that shows that “normal” vagina’s really do come in all shapes and sizes!

Are you surprised that labiaplasty is on the rise?
