NEWS: Plans for Dog Adoption Cafe in LA

The Dog Cafe ‘Pup-Up’ event in Los Angeles

Cat cafes are so passé (kidding, they of course still wondrous), now it’s all going to the dogs. Dog lover and rescuer Sarah Wolfgang is hoping to launch LA’s first ever dog cafe. Not just a place where pet-deprived locals can come to enjoy a cuddle and a coffee (from Hounds and Grounds Coffee Co. who donate 20% of profits to local rescues), Sarah’s vision is to create a space where prospective owners can meet adoptable dogs in a relaxed and positive environment. Her goal is to find forever homes for over 100 dogs in the first year.

The Dog Cafe is currently crowd-funding via Indiegogo. To give dog-lovers a taste of what they can expect if the permanent cafe gets the go ahead, Sarah and the Dog Cafe team recently hosted a ‘Pup Up’ event, with an adorable group of dogs from Wags and Walks, an LA rescue (see adorbs pictures below courtesy of Eugene Lee at laist.com).

Sarah got the idea for the Dog Cafe after working with a rescue organisation in Korea. The huge over-crowding of LA’s dog shelters is no secret, and dogs being held in a rescue can often become depressed and withdrawn, not giving future owners real picture of the pet’s usually loveable personality. Sarah hopes the Dog Cafe will offer a new, happier alternative for connecting adoptable dogs with owners.

“Many dogs are overlooked simply because they seem too shy or are too bark-y. But the reality behind these dogs is that most of them are highly adoptable, yet so many do not get a second chance because we don’t get to appreciate their real personalities,” she says.

“The Dog Cafe is going to put a spin on the way people adopt by totally reinventing the way we connect with homeless dogs. We want to provide you with the opportunity to see these highly adoptable pooches in their true light. And even if you’re not looking to adopt, you can still enjoy all of the sloppy kisses you’ve ever wanted.”

Sarah needs to raise a rather ambitious US$200,00 to get the Dog Cafe off the ground. Unlike Cat Cafe’s, a Dog Cafe will require a large amount of space and specially built facilities to accommodate the resident rescues pooches. Her Indiegogo campaign ends on 5th February 2015.
