HIIT It! Book Review, Amazeballs, and Giveaway

Hey friends, good morning! Is everyone settling in to the new year by now?

I have no doubt that many of us are entering into this new year with somewhat of a “fresh approach” attitude. Whether or not you make resolutions (I’m not necessarily one for them, although I have attempted in the past), you most likely have some goals in mind to better your day-to-day life.

Well, for any of you that may be looking to improve your health a bit, whether it be cleaning up your eats, getting back into a workout routine, or even starting one, I have a little something that could absolutely give you that little ‘push’ you might need: HIIT It! by my lovely blog friend, Gina the Fitnessista.

I was so excited, and honored, when Gina asked me to be a part of her blogger book tour. Of course I would!

Gina’s blog is one of the first blogs I started reading back in 2009, before I finally took the plunge and started my own in 2010. I’ve had the chance to meet Gina a couple of times, and we try to stay in touch a bit, so I’m hopefully that we’ll have the opportunity again sooner rather than later!

But enough about that…let’s talk about this book.

I am SO proud of her for putting together such an amazing program. It was immediately obvious after reading just a few pages that there was a LOT of time that was put into this book, and it shows from beginning to end. A couple of quick takeaways…

  • Everything is extremely easy to follow, from the workouts to the recipes.
  • There are many photos included to help clarify the exercises.

  • The exercise program is very suitable for a large audience: those short on time, those without access to a gym, and even those who may be new to a fitness program.
  • The book is basically broken into two main parts: Fitness and Diet

  • There are TONS of sample workouts and recipes to try! And both are extremely thought out and outlined wonderfully.

  • It’s obvious that Gina really knows her stuff. She’s not just throwing a workout at you to try…she’s explaining it, offering ways to tweak or adapt it, and presenting it in a way that is easy to read and follow.
  • Her personality really shines through! Having only met Gina a couple of times, it was so funny to read many of the pages and be able to just picture/hear her saying it. She’s sweet, friendly, and encouraging, and I have no doubt that her personality will pull readers in!
  • Oh…and the recipes? Not only is there a great variety, but my oh my, is there some GOOD stuff!

Even though Gina’s Amazeballs are probably one of her most popular recipes, I couldn’t help but make a couple of her varieties to share with you all. I also made her Quinoa Cookies and Butternut Squash Bites (both equally delish) but these are, hands down, my favorite.

The first variety I made was Cocoa Berry. Mmmm, mmmm.

Cocoa Berry Amazeballs

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup oats
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened coconut flakes
  • 1/4 cup dried, mixed berries (I did a combo of dates, cranberries, and raisins)
  • 2 tbsp vanilla almond butter
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch of sea salt

Directions:

1. Pulse all ingredients in a food processor until well-combined. Check the texture and make sure it stays combined when a small amount is pressed between your fingers. If not, add a little more maple syrup or a splash of water.

2. Roll the mixture into balls (5 larger ones, or 10 small ones) and store in the fridge.

The second variety I made, which was my absolute faaaavorite, was PB&J!

Peanut Butter & Jelly Amazeballs

  • 1/4 cup oats
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened coconut flakes
  • 1/4 cup mix-ins (I did a combo of dates and mini chocolate chips…OMG!)
  • 2 tbsp peanut butter
  • 2 tbsp seedless raspberry jam
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch of sea salt

Directions:

1. Pulse all ingredients in a food processor until well-combined. Check the texture and make sure it stays combined when a small amount is pressed between your fingers. If not, add a little more maple syrup or a splash of water.

2. Roll the mixture into balls (5 larger ones, or 10 small ones) and store in the fridge.
