Apologia Physical Science Module 5 Labs

After a rather long break, welcome back to our Apologia Physical Science labs!

In Module 5, we look at the Hydrosphere.

Apologia Physical Science Module 5 Labs

Experiment 5.1 Evaporation, Condensation and Precipitation.

This experiment looks at the transference of water from the ocean to freshwater.

After dissolving salt in a pan of water, bring the water to a boil. Carefully tilt a lid over the water while holding a bag of ice on top. Angle the lid so the lower portion of it is over an empty bowl.

Eventually you will notice water dripping off the lid and into the bowl. Once there’s enough in the bowl you may turn the heat off and stop the experiment. Stick your finger in the small bowl of “collected” water. What do you notice?

Experiment 5.2 Ice and Salt

This experiment looks at saltwater freezing at a lower temperature than freshwater.

After dissolving salt in water, set the bowl in the freezer.

While you are waiting, grab an ice cube. On a plate, sprinkle a little bit of salt in the middle of the ice cube ….. and wait…..

Over time, the ice melts through the ice cube.

Once the bowl of salt water in the freezer is 1/2 frozen, pull it out and strain the water. Rinse the ice with cold water and allow the remainder of the ice to continue melting. Taste the melt water…. what does it taste like?

Experiment 5.3 Cloud Formation

This experiment takes a look at how clouds form.

Fill a plastic bottle with a small amount of warm water. Cap and squeeze the bottle with both hands. Note what happens.

Open the bottle and put it back into its’ original shape. Light a match and drop it into the bottle. Quickly put the lid back on a repeat the squeezing.

Ah! Now what do you see?
