Paul Nyakatura, Feminist Hero | Pocket Layout

Usually my motto is document now, make later. I want to make sure I’m capturing memories with photos and words while life is happening, but it doesn’t matter to me when I get around to adding in the printed photos and stickers and glue. But there are exceptions. Every so often, right after something awesome happens, the story fills me up and I want to drop everything and make something right then. This is one of those pages.

I was at an open mic night to watch my friend Paul Nyakatura perform stand-up. He was awesome, but a lot of the comics before him were painful to watch. Sexist trope after sexist trope.

A few comics up before Paul razzed us for being out together and just being friends (the audacity of us!). I called a comic out for being sexist after he wouldn’t leave us alone, and he moved on (bombing), but Paul worked the whole thing into his routine and just killed it.

I was filled up with love and pride for my friend, so I made a page to celebrate him asap. I was originally thinking that I’d write basically a transcript of the back and forth, but I decided I don’t want to remember the specifics of the ridiculous macho crap. I wanted to remember the win.

Keep on winning, my friend.

P.S. This is the first page I’ve made with We R Memory Keepers 8.5×11 pocket page protectors and I really like it! Pocket pages in the 8.5×11 size are hard to find, unless you are using trading card protectors and those pockets have funky sizes. If you have other brand recommendations for this size, I’d love to hear them!

Supplies: December Oh Deer Me kit and Short Red Arrow Clips // We R Memory Keepers 8.5×11 pocket page protector // Basic Grey Aurora Hydra and Gemini paper // Prima Blossom Bud ink // Becky Higgins Project Life journaling pens.
