That was the year
So time is a funny old thing. You take a little of it to refresh your brain a bit and before you know four months have gone past at high speed and left your meagre attempts at regular blogging in the dust. Oops.
2013 was a brilliant year. I finally completed the goal of my six year-old self to get a PhD (and believe me the novelty of requiring everyone to refer to me as Dr has still yet to wear off); I landed the greatest job in the world in science media, policy and communications; I learned how to drive a rally car; made sloe gin; and went on a wonderful holiday to Italy during which I got engaged to a really rather splendid chap. So to the 2013 list I should also add finding a beautiful wedding venue and, most excitingly of all, ordering my wedding dress. With a wedding date set for late July and some fairly epic honeymoon plans in the pipeline, it’s safe to say that 2014 will also err on the side of unbelievable awesomeness.
The last three months have given me some time to think about my blog. ScientistChic was born during my PhD, to give me some creative fashion playspace for my laboratory downtime. Today my downtime is so different to what it was then; for one I have almost completely lost interest in the cycle of fashion. I’ve ridden the crazy carousel of “trends” enough times to not give two monkeys now about what will be hot in a few weeks time. I still love fashion, but on a smaller scale – watching my favourite designers grow and evolve from season to season; appreciating the craftsmanship that goes into making the very best garments; and even making my own forays into dressmaking and designing. The mantra for 2014 is “can I make that?” and I want to share my adventures in design land on here. I also want to write about other things that interest me, from Victorian horror novels to Alfred Russel Wallace to making chocolate fondant (a newly discovered talent). Basically anything that takes my fancy, fashun or otherwise.
With that in mind I decided it was time to put ScientistChic to bed, and welcome a new blog name for a new era.
