Laura Mercier Gel Lip Colour in Temptation

This winter, I have really been making an effort to try out berry coloured lips however it isn't easy. Dark hues often scare a lot of people away, especially if you're quite fair like I am. However Laura Mercier have the answer with their Gel Lip Colour range, specifically the shade Temptation that I bought from the Space NK sale for a bargain £8.50.

If you'd like to see the other bargains that I bought in the sale then check out my post here but for now, let me crack on with reviewing this berry beauty.

The Laura Mercier Gel Lip Colour is unlike any lipstick formula I've tried before. It is a gel based formula that sits somewhere in between a lip balm and a sheer lipstick. The result is a beautiful wash of colour that feels hydrating and looks glossy on the lips without any stickiness whatsoever.

This lipstick doesn't dry the lips out whatsoever, instead it leaves them feeling conditioned which is great if you're someone who suffers from dry lips, particularly during the winter months when you're likely to wear this shade of lipstick a lot. A lot of lipsticks will cling unfavourably to chapped lips whereas this one doesn't as it simply glides on and makes your lips look healthy and juicy.

Temptation is beautiful berry shade that has lots of pink and purple tones in it. I find that this is one of those lip colours that has the ability to make your teeth look whiter which I am all about.

In the bullet, this lipstick looks as though it would be quite dark but when applied to the lips, it gives a sheer tint of berry colour. I initially thought that this lipstick would be very easy to apply with a steady hand, negating the need to have a mirror present which would be great for when on the go. However, since this lipstick has a very hydrating formula, I did find it to be quite slippy to apply and while it didn't bleed, I found that because it would impart colour so easily, using a mirror was essential to ensure a precise application.

While this lipstick doesn't appear to have swatch too evenly, it is foolproof when applied to the lips because it appears to have a much more even texture and the colour looks gorgeous. I think that this is a really good transitional lipstick for those who want to try a darker colour but who want something that has a formula that is fairly easy to work with, i.e. it isn't too bold and it isn't matte. I love the way that it looks with my new lilac jumper, featured in my outfit post here, which shows that it would work with lighter clothing as well as darker looks.

Another thing that makes this lipstick such a joy to apply and wear is the delicious scent that it has; very sweet, like a cross between vanilla and butterscotch.

I didn't find this lipstick to be particularly long lasting on my lips; I could get about an hour and a half out of it before needing to reapply but that's only if I hadn't eaten or drank anything. After drinking, this lip colour virtually all comes off but it doesn't migrate across the face which leads me to believe that this could be a good lipstick for those who want to wear a darker lip but go out to dinner or something. Wearing this lipstick to such a situation would leave you safe in the knowledge that it would wear off evenly and not leave you with any unsightly dark worn off lipstick rings around your lips!

It is also worth noting that the packaging feels quite small and dinky for a lipstick which makes it perfect for popping into your handbag, whatever the size!

While I bought this lippy on sale at Space NK, I'm not sure whether they'll be getting it back in stock. I believe they were a new limited edition release for last spring/summer but you should still be able to get them online. I know the American Laura Mercier site has them, as does the UK John Lewis site, albeit for the full price of £17.50.

Now you know me, I'll always be honest with you and I will say that I don't think this lipstick is worth the full £17.50. I'm happy with the price that I paid for it but if you're wanting to save up for a luxury lipstick then I wouldn't recommend this one. If money isn't an option for you then go for it. It left my lips feeling hydrated and smooth with a lovely colour on them but it wasn't long lasting at all and the colour was very sheer.

I loved the colour but it is a glorified tinted lip balm and I do think that there are products out there that have a very similar effect on the lips, if not better, for much less money. For example, a very similar lip product would be the one that I'm wearing in this post, the Revlon Colourburst Balm Stain in Crush.
