When China Beckons

I’ve taken a sort of summer sabbatical. As I get back into blogging, some of my friends are hanging around and sharing their stories. Rachael is SO BRAVE and I am unbelievably proud of her as she starts a new journey across the Pacific. Check out her story and leave her a bit of encouragement :). I know her courage encourages me.

Hey, Where My Soul Belongs readers! My name is Rachael and I blog at The Rachael Way. My blog can be put into the category of a lifestyle/random blog, but soon it will become an expat blog because… I’m moving to CHINA!
I just graduated in May with a teaching degree, and somehow I wound up leaving the country in less than a month. It is definitely the scariest and most exciting thing I have ever done. Today I thought it would be fun to share why I’m moving abroad!
//I love adventure I have always loved adventure. My friends look to me to plan fun nights out or elaborate nights in; I’m not bragging, that’s just who I am! I’m confident that I am able to pick up my life and settle well into another culture. Although it will not be easy, it will be an adventure!! (At least that’s what I’m telling myself…)
//It’s an opportunity for growth For the past yearish, I’ve been obsessively trying to be a better me; I’m talking therapy, working on my issues, growing in my relationship with Christ, learning to rely on myself, being confident in singleness, developing close friendships with people who make me better, etc. I know moving far away from the life I have built in Ohio will be a challenge, but as Brittany reminds me weekly, I will grow up and learn to rely on myself!
//Teaching is different abroad I don’t want to get political (this isn’t the place!), but as you know if you’ve been following the media lately that education in America is, how do I put this, a bit of a hot mess lately. I’m really genuinely excited to teach in a culture where teachers are respected, the pay isn’t completely horrible, and the kids listen to you! #thatsallimsayin
//I feel called to do it When I first heard about this opportunity at a job fair, I brushed it off. “Move to China? YEAH. RIGHT.” But I prayed about it. I talked to very few, very trusted friends, but mostly talked to Jesus. Guess what? He wants me here. I know he does. And that’s a REALLY cool thing.
//It’s great blog material ;) Haha, I’m totally kidding, but I can’t wait to document my experiences on the blog! Feel free to come say hi on twitter or instagram.
Have you ever taught abroad or embraced a huge life change? How did you handle it?
