Popularity

Jennifer Zander Wilck of Fried Oreos is our host this week for The Writer’s Post Blog Hop. Her topic is popularity. Although, this is probably not a conventional take on the subject—here is what came to my mind first.

I have a love of wine. Oh no doubt, I know many others do too, yet my love of wine has generally been the love of red wine. In particular, a good bottle of Merlot will make my night, ANY NIGHT, unless I have to work then I have to refrain. BUT that said, it is extremely hard to pass up a bottle of Merlot, when nothing is planned for the evening.

And I can’t just open the bottle and have a single glass. No. That would be sinful. To open that bottle of Merlot would mean that the 11th commandment kicks in, “Thou shalt not waste a good bottle of wine.” So I am sure to keep my commandments, especially the 11th commandment and drink the entire thing.

What do you mean you never heard of the 11th commandment?? Okay, well, trust me…I got us covered.

I have never been particularly fond of white wines. I am not sure why. I do not like Champaign or any of the other drier white wines like sherry—but a wine tasting event led me to try a Pinot Grigio and oh my, I found bliss in that bottle of white wine. Oh my heavens, I do believe a 12th commandment should have been made, something like: “Thou Shalt try Pinot Grigio in your life time”… or something like that. I have to tell you it has become almost as popular in my wine selection on my evenings off as the Merlot—and that is really saying something.

In all honesty, I don’t drink very often, not as often as this blog post would make you think. Blame it on all that stuff I have planned every time I have a night off…with five kids, something always seems ‘planned’ or comes up out of the blue. I can think of three occasions in 2012 that I even opened a bottle, all of them at the beginning of year. Twice, I wasn’t even home, I was out on a date with my hubby and since I was eating steak, Merlot was my choice for the evening. The other time I chose to drink wine at home, I selected a Pinot Grigio to enjoy. And to those of you who know me—that is just a huge change from the way I once was. After all, I always drink a Merlot, when I’m just enjoying wine.

For various reasons, I haven’t had any wine since. Blasphemy, I know…but I keep collecting wines. Each time I go to the grocery store, I stroll through the wine section, seeing what is on sale, and deciding if I should buy another bottle of wine. The answer is very often “yes” and my collection builds. I don’t always buy just Merlot or Pinot Noir’s. I have various types of wine in my collection, including, but not limited to imported wines. However the two most popular wines in my collection are definitely, Merlot and Pinot Grigio.

As of my last count I have 14 bottles of Merlot and 12 bottles of Pinot Grigio, among other red and white wines I have saved up. Clearly the Merlot is my most popular wine in my wine collection, but that Grigio is a very close second. If the right sale hits, it may not even be that way for very long.

I wonder if my local grocery store realizes they are driving the popularity contest between Merlot and Pinot Grigio in my home? Okay, well, no… probably not…but if they DID realize this fact, would they change their sales techniques? Hmmm..that is something to ponder heavily the next time I open a bottle.

What am I saving all that wine for? I have no clue…but if anyone wants to have a big ole party—I think I’m well prepared. And I’m sure a party with that much wine just might make me popular for an evening. LOL. I just need a night off and a babysitter, and I’m all set.

What is your take on popularity?

Do you have a popularity contest running in your home?

If so, what is it?

Cheers,
