Shibuya & Akihabara

渋谷区

And now a slightly different backdrop in Tokyo! I think this is probably the scene conjured up in most people’s minds when they think about the city. The famous Shibuya crossing, a scramble of people heading in any and every direction. I’ve also dotted in a few pictures of crazy Akihabara, as I couldn’t miss it out.

I wasn’t even planning on shooting my casual look for exploring the city (Converse ftw!) but when we arrived at the crossing we couldn’t help but cross back and forth to get a few snaps. It’s an iconic backdrop!

I guess this part of Shibuya is similar to most other cities – big buildings, lots of shops and lots of people to boot. I know people talk about having culture shock when they visit, but here felt almost like being in a Japanese New York – I’m sure you can see a few similarities in the pictures.

Akihabara however was another world. We didn’t spend long there, but the place was full of young men (and more tourists than we’d noticed elsewhere so far), most fawning over figurines of characters from their favourite anime.

I was a little out of my depth (I mean, Sailor Moon is about as far as I go) but it was fascinating looking around the shops. We even stumbled across a crowd of crazed boys dancing to music playing outside a shop, some with their faces in their hands because they were so overwhelmed. Perhaps this is where the culture shock comes into play…! More about Akihabara in my guide – keep your eyes peeled!
