Trees #15 - LEAVES

SundayTree15

TREES #15 - LEAVES

We are continuing the second phase of our Bible study on trees by studying the different parts like: roots, branches, trunk and leaves.

In today's continuation of the trees series, we will be focusing on the LEAVES.

This is Part#15 on "Leaves".

We begin in Genesis at the Garden of Eden where Adam and Eve used leaves as clothing after they had disobeyed God and eaten from the Tree of Knowledge (see Bible verse below):

SundayTrees15B

(we touched on this verse in part#2 click HERE to view "From the Fall to Forgiveness.")

"Leaves" are also used as symbolism throughout the Bible.  In the passage below we see that the righteous believer is being compared to a thriving green leaf:

"Those who trust in their riches will fall,
but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf."
Proverbs 11:28

Or in Jeremiah 17, where anyone who trusts in the Lord is again compared to a thriving green leaf.  This was part of my "FearNot" series (click HERE to view: "FearNot#6 - No Fear When Heat Comes.")

FearNot6

We complete our study on leaves with my favorite - the Tree of Life and specifically the leaves that become medicine to heal all the nations.  See both passages below (Ezekiel and Revelation):

SundayTrees15A

SundayTrees15C

What an unimaginable joy that will be to eat from the Tree of Life and be healed by the leaves from that Tree!
But for now, let's strife to be that righteous green leaf that never withers from the difficult hot times.

Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing #129

Welcome to the 129th Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing!

I miss the old hymns that I remember from my childhood - there were no drums, no electric guitar and no mind numbing beat. It was just voices and maybe a piano or an organ. The choir led the congregation in singing - and the words of these hymns are poetic. I realize that there is a need for the modern "seeker oriented" worship music - but it is also necessary to have deeper songs (no offense intended to anyone who prefers the newer church songs).

I decided to have an "Old Fashion Sunday Hymn Sing" once a month on this blog.
I personally do NOT have a great singing voice - I used to play the guitar & piano but my voice is NOT an instrument. That's the great thing about this digital hymn sing, you can warble along without being embarrassed or without offending anyone else.

The hymns that we will be studying are taken from an old hymnal from a Baptist church that is no longer in existence - "The North American Hymnal" published in 1956 by "THE ROGER WILLIAMS PRESS"

I will also try to find a version of the featured hymn on "YouTube" to share with you each month.

Today's featured hymn is "O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing" written by Charles Wesley (1707-1788) & composed by Carl G. Glaser (1784-1829).  Some say that today's featured hymn writer could be the best of all time.  He wrote about 6,500 hymns in his lifetime!!!  However, "only" about 480 were published (only -haha).  Actually, that published number is a total between him and his brother John Wesley who also had published hymns.  Charles was the youngest of 18 children!!  It was one of his older brothers that made it possible for him to go to school/college.  There is much more to his history but I shared what pertains to his hymn writing.

Recently, on one of the "God's Power Within Us" posts we focused on "The Power of Life & Peace" and since those are almost the exact words to verse 3 of today's song I thought I'd re-share that post:
SundayPower7

I have included two videos below the lyrics.  The music is different in each video but most of the lyrics are the same.
Enjoy!

Turn with me to number 189 in your hymnals and let's sing:

O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing
written by Charles Wesley (1707-1788)
composed by Carl G. Glaser (1784-1829)

1. O for a thousand tongues to sing My great Redeemer's praise, The glories of my God and King, The triumphs of His grace!

2.   My gracious Master and my God, Assist me to proclaim, To spread thro' all the earth abroad The honors of Thy Name.

3.   Jesus!  The Name that charms our fears, That bids our sorrows case, Tis music in the sinner's ears, "Tis life, and health, and peace.

3.   He speaks, and listning to His voice, New life the dead receive;  The mournful, broken hearts rejoice;  The humble poor believe.

A special thanks to "Martijn de Groot" for sharing this with us!

Old Fashion Rhubarb Bread RECIPE

unnamed (53)

Old Fashion Rhubarb Bread RECIPE

This recipe is "old fashion" for two reasons:
1.  Rhubarb is considered an old fashioned ingredient
2.  This is a simple fruit bread recipe without any modern twist or tweak (Actually, technically rhubarb is a vegetable).

Last year I shared with you how to save rhubarb seeds:

Ingredients:
1 egg
1 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
2/3 cup melted butter (cooled to lukewarm)
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt (unless you are using salted butter - they decrease to 1/2 tsp salt)
2 1/2 cups flour
2 cups diced rhubarb
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

unnamed (41)

Begin by preparing the rhubarb (rinsing and dicing) and by melting the butter so that it can cool.

unnamed (42)

In a large mixing bowl combine the egg, milk, vanilla extract, sugar and melted butter.  Stir until combined (but not whipped).
Now add the flour, salt and baking soda - stir until combined.  Finally, add the rhubarb and chopped nuts (see pictures below):

unnamed (43)unnamed (44)

Grease 2 loaf pans (or line them with parchment paper) and fill each loaf pan with equal amounts of batter (see picture below):

unnamed (48)

Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 45 to 55 minutes (or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean).

unnamed (50)

Remove from the oven and cool while in the pan for 10 minutes before turning the loaves out of the pans.

unnamed (55)

Serve warm or cooled (with or without butter) and ENJOY!
