Keeping Your Home Safe While Traveling

If you are going to be away from your home, whether you are on holiday, business trip or if you are going on a weekend getaway, you would want to know your home is secure and have the peace of mind to enjoy your time whilst you’re away. No matter how long you are gonna be away from home, taking a few precautions will help keep your home safe. These are a few things to do to keep your home safe, whilst you’re away.

1. Security Check

Start by putting your home in a total lockdown, from your doors, every window to every access in your home. Make sure that your home is well secured to prevent people from going in and see any valuables you have inside your home. Ensure that every door are is in top condition and functions well, if not, you may consider contacting your local locksmiths and seek safety advice. You may also consider purchasing high-security locks if you feel like you need to. Additionally, if you have a garage or gates with automatic locks, you may want to disable the lock whilst you are away. This will stop anyone with a universal lock opener to gain entry to your home.

2. Don’t Make it Obvious

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners tend to do, in terms of security, is leaving the impression that no one is at home while they are away. Do not leave newspapers or mail pile up in your front door. This will let burglars know that you are away and you are not coming back anytime soon. Instead, you should put your newspaper or mail delivery on hold whilst you are away or ask your trusted neighbor to pick them and keep it for you. Another mistake that people make is posting vacation pictures on their social media. This will let people know that you are not at home and it might be the next target for home invasion.

3. Ask for Help

If you are planning to be away for a while, it is wise to ask a friend, or trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your home. If you are able to control the lights in your home through your mobile phones try to turn it on during the night to prevent the wrong impressions. However, you are unable to do this, ask your friend or a neighbor to come over to your home and turn on the lights at night. This will help prevent people from noticing that you are not at home.
