Why Pet Ferrets Bite?

Pet ferrets that have been developing a nasty biting habit may first want to find out why the animal bites. If your ferret has been going for your hand, then it is highly probable that your pet has become scared of hands. Maybe there has been an instance previously where human hands caused the pet ferret some pain. If that is the case, then your pet ferret requires plenty of positive reinforcement and reassurance.

Along with fear-biting, ferrets might bite because they are trying to protect their spot or are just angry. If you are trying to put your hand inside their hiding spot, then it is highly likely that your pet will bite because it is their hiding spot.

The main thing to do when trying to change a ferret who bites is to remove that motivation that pushes them to bite. The ferret bites because a bite produces results. You take your hand back. But if the act of biting does not produce any results, then the pet will cease this biting behavior

Also, remember to offer a reward to your pet ferret if they behave properly. If your pet plays nicely, offer a treat and encourage them with a gentle tone of voice as it encourages non-biting behaviors.

Make an appointment with your veterinary hospital San Antonio, TX if you have any concerns about your pet’s behavior.
