Overview of Scholarship Programmes in Germany

If you want the benefit of international education, think about enrolling in one of the universities in Germany. The country has become a popular destination for overseas students, who are looking for quality international education without burning a hole in their pocket. In fact, Germany offers cheaper higher education when compared to the UK, the US and Australia, and overseas students can avail a number of scholarships that practically allow them to study for free in Germany.

Free College and University Education in Germany

From 2014, colleges and universities in Germany are not charging tuition fees for undergraduate programmes. However, certain federal states in the country do charge nominal semester and administration fees.

While the undergraduate study is free in Germany, Master’s and PhD programmes are not free. Candidates have to pay enrollment fees, confirmation fees, and tuition fees. But, as a student, you can avail numerous scholarships to help pay for your education.

Eramus Scholarship Programme: The Eramus Scholarship Programme is being operated by the European Commission to fund international students, who are interested in studying in Europe. Rather than being a scholarship, this is more like a grant for overseas students as it helps in taking care of the students’ living costs in the country.

Foundation-Funded Scholarship Programmes

Many political and religious foundations in the country offer scholarships aimed at international students. It is best to check the eligibility criteria as some scholarships, like the Alfred Toepfer Foundation scholarships are meant for students from Europe, Turkey and Israel, who want to pursue a postgraduate degree programme in Germany. This scholarship is only given to students pursuing higher education in forestry and agriculture, architecture, arts, culture, and social sciences.

On the other hand, Einstein International Postdoctoral Fellowship is offered by the Einstein Foundation to researchers, who want to pursue postdoctoral research at any university in Berlin. The Heinrich Boll Scholarship programme is open to students, who want to get their Master’s or PhD degree from an approved university in Germany.

University-Funded Scholarships

Nearly all colleges and universities in Germany offer merit-based scholarships to students from other countries. Some scholarships are meant for international students from a specific area while others are open to students from all regions.

Students from emerging economies or developing countries, who want to take up postdoctoral research in Germany, can apply for Georg Forster Fellowship.

The Frankfurt School of Finance and Management, offer tuition fees waiver to doctoral students in the fields of mathematics, accounting, finance and business administration.
