3 Ways to Find Joy in the Little Things


My life has been a little hectic lately, especially after I made the monumental decision to leave a steady paycheck in pursuit of a writing career. Now, more than ever, I've discovered it's easy to get caught up in everything happening around me - the need-to-do's, the have-to-do's, the want-to-do's, etc...

Sometimes, however, it's important to step back and take a deep breath. Life isn't just about the hustle - it's also about appreciating what we have now. We need to find balance between aspiration and acknowledging who we are, how far we've come, and all of the little blessings in our lives.

So how do you do that?

1) Unplug.

Technology is a wonderful thing. It's become a huge part of our lives (which can be both good and bad), but that doesn't mean we need to be tuned into the digital world 24/7.

All of that added noise - tweets, filters, etc - can prevent you from seeing what's right in front of you like your friends, family, an adorable puppy, or maybe just the sound of birds chirping.

If you don't have the time or ability to do a full tech detox, don't stress. You don't have to quit cold turkey. Try turning your phone off for an hour and be alone with your thoughts.

I spend so much of my day moving that sometimes I forget what it's like to be alone with my own thoughts. Taking that breather from technology - or from people - is a great way to refocus, recharge, and get ready to take on the world one step at a time.

2) Slow down.

As a #GIRLBOSS, my life is busy. Traveling, work, writing - it consumes my days with more vigor than Cookie Monster. I love it, don't get me wrong, but sometimes I need to take a step back.

Even some of the biggest stars in Hollywood take a break from music - Katy Perry, Selena Gomez, Lady Gaga - because mental health is important.

It's not just about stopping when you're stressed, though. Sometimes it's just as important to take a break so you don't burn out.

Make a conscious effort to hit the brakes, even for a few minutes, and you'll be surprised what it can do for your mental health. Go for a walk during lunch and soak in the beauty of the outdoors. Leave space for a car to get in front of you during a traffic jam.

While I love the grind and the sense of accomplishment that comes with 'Go, go, go,' I also need to learn how to just be.

3) Do something for you.

I'm sure you've seen it somewhere online recently. Self-care matters, and everyone's talking about it.

Why? Because it. is. freaking. important.

I'm a much happier human being when I'm taking care of myself, which means I find it easier to appreciate all of the good things (and even the not-so-good things) in my life.

Take a yoga class, drink some wine, eat the damn cupcake, go for a run - whatever will give you a brain break, do it.

Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to have it all to be happy. (What is 'it' anyway?) You just need to learn to appreciate the things you do have, appreciate the climb, and smile.
