Hooked on at First Sight: The Importance of a visually appealing presentation!

There is this really interesting quote by Dr. John Medina. It goes something like this. 'Public Speaking Professionals say you win or lose the battle to hold your audience in the first 30 seconds of a given presentation.' It's a quote that should serve as a Talisman for all those who wish to prepare a powerpoint presentation. That is so because it is in the first 30 seconds that the audience judges whether your powerpoint is interesting or not. I know it's a hard call but an overwhelming majority of the audience does not wait for you to give out the information which you are there to give before making up their mind about your presentation. This is one of the biggest reasons why it is imperative for a presenter to ensure that that his powerpoint is not just good content-wise, it is also visually appealing. They must ensure that their presentation carries a story and the most important thing being that the audience must see that you are convinced about your presentation.

There is this great example of how viewers made up their minds within the first few moments of a presentation. The event was the first televised debate for the presidential election in US History in the year 1960. The two competitors were the sitting Vice President Richard Nixon and political greenhorn John F Kennedy. Now, as this was the first time a debate was going to be televised both the presidential candidates were not exactly sure how things were going to pan out and had to be briefed. When the time to go on air came both of them were given the option of applying makeup. While John F Kennedy, mindful of the fact that he had to present himself well opted for it but Richard Nixon, is the sitting Vice President said no. While Nixon did apply a pasty cream at the last moment but that did nothing to help is his cause.

Moving ahead, when the cameras were switched on Richard Nixon was shown to be constantly fidgeting around in his seat while John F Kennedy sat in his seat in a very gracious and confident manner. In the very first moments of the debate, before the candidates had even opened their mouths, the television viewers had made up their opinion that while John F Kennedy, despite being a political greenhorn, looked very presidential. On the other hand Vice President Richard Nixon, who was looking all fidgety and out of focus, came across to the viewers as somebody who had stolen something. These impressions set the tone of the debate and Richard Nixon, despite making sense when he started talking, lost the debate.

Now, this is exactly what happens when we walk into a hall or a conference room dressed in a suit but with a shoddy looking presentation. To prevent such unwanted situations from happening we should seriously consider taking the help of powerpoint presentation design services.
