First and foremost, you can sleep whenever you want. When I was in college one thing I always struggled with was trying to sleep when my roommate was around and vice versa. You try to respect their right to be watching TV or talking on the phone, but sometimes you also really need a nap. If you’re ever out late and your roommate is already asleep, you better be careful to tip-toe around getting ready for bed. In a private room, none of these things are a problem!

Nobody is touching your stuff. Not to say that roommates are always going through your stuff, but when you share a space with someone your stuff and their stuff can get a bit messy. Say you both have the same set of pens for your art class, you’re running late but you can’t remember if those ones are yours or if they belong to your roommate. Sometimes BYU student living can be complicated when you all have conflicting schedules. Having a private room alleviates clutter from other people, so you at least have a good idea of where your belongings are.

You can still have a fun social life with your roommates! Just because you’re sleeping in different rooms doesn’t mean you can’t have that same bond with your roommates that you see in movies. Roommates can become lifelong friends! Cooking together and watching movies together can be so fun, while still having the ability to go back to your own room for some personal time. Need someone to go with you to that school event? You have a friend and fellow student right there in your home.

Decorate however you want! That weird poster your mom always hated? There’s no mom or roommate to tell you no! You love basketball, but your roommates never let you keep your basketballs on the desk? No such problem when you have a private room.
