Hawaiian Quilting

I'm on vacation on Kauai and today is a rainy day. Perfect for exploring some Hawaiian quilt shops!

First stop is Vicky's Fabrics. They had a lot of beautiful Sylvia Pippen designs Sashiko patterns and kits which I really love.

Lots of Bright tropical Aloha fabrics as well as some unique handmade items.

I chose an Aloha print jelly roll and a couple sashiko, appliqué quilt kits. The kits include fabric and sashiko thread.

There was a great variety of Hawaiian fabrics!

Our next stop was Kapaia Stitchery. They also had an extensive variety of Hawaiian print fabrics. I found a really nice print for a cute dress.

I love the fact that they offered some traditional Hawaiian quilt kits. The appliqué pieces are cut out and basted on the background fabric so all you have to do is the fun part. I love doing needle turn appliqué, especially on traditional Hawaiian designs.

This was the best example of a traditional Hawaiian quilt that I encountered on my adventure today. It's an absolutely gorgeous design in a beautiful muted sage green on ivory. It's most likely hand quilted and the pattern of the quilting is characteristic of traditional Hawaiian quilts.Unfortunately there is no quilt museum here on Kauai. The Honolulu museum of art inHonolulu apparently has a traditional quilt exhibit. One day perhaps I'll make a stop there!Happy Quilting!
