How to Recover Faster from an Orthopaedic Surgery

Improvement in orthopaedic surgery over the years has resulted in a lower risk of infection and a more rapid recovery. While orthopedic surgery gives the patient a lot of pain, there are many pain relief medicines that can be taken to alleviate it. Recovery is a lengthy and painful process taking the patient a great deal of patience. It can not be sped up or complications may arise over the long term. However, there are also certain things you can do to help you heal more easily.

Begin physical therapy before the surgery

Contrary to the assumptions of many, healing usually starts months before surgery. You can start going to the gym around 6 months before the surgery, to build muscles around your body. For example, if you are going to undergo knee surgery, muscles such as your Quadriceps muscles, calf muscles, and thigh muscles should be building up around it. By strengthening the muscles around the injured area, you help your knee be able to rely on the muscles around it to support it. After surgery combined with physical therapy, the recovery time would be shortened considerably.

Start physical therapy right after surgery

Immediately after the surgery, physical therapy begins and gradually increases the duration as days pass. Gentle rotations should be carried out around the injured area, and due to anaesthesia it will be pain-free. This will also help decrease the scarring and stiffness of the injured portion. As days pass slowly, you can increase the length and strength of your physical therapy session.

Opt for minimally invasive surgery

Always try to opt for minimally invasive surgery or arthroscopy, whenever possible. Instead of cutting the surgical site open, arthroscopy makes a few small incisions which enable the insertion of cameras and surgical tools into your body. It reduces the chances of infection with a small incision and also significantly decreases the recovery time.

Go to Your Follow Up Appointments Regularly

It is vital that your progress is tracked by your orthopaedic surgeon and get your plans modified and personalized if needed.

Eat healthy and nutritious foods

After surgery, proper nutrition will help speed up the healing process. Since protein is the building block for the body, you should consume lots of protein. The protein-rich foods include chicken, fish, and red meat. You should be eating enough greens too. Spinach, broccoli, cabbage, and asparagus are excellent food sources for the body.

Take Proper Medication

You are more likely to be on some form of pain medicine after surgery. Speak to your orthopaedic surgeon about how and when to take these medications, and whether you can apply to your daily recovery schedule a few multivitamins or other supplements.

Orthopaedic surgery often requires long periods of recovery which require a great deal of patience, commitment and patient perseverance. Do not hurry through the counseling because it can do more harm than good.
