Do you ever stop to wonder why you celebrate birthdays, valentines day, new years..?
What exactly are you celebrating? The fact that you are now, by the rules of society, one “year” older, even though time does not exist outside of the modern-day human mind, and there is no such thing as the past or future? The day you feel compelled to tweet #foreveralone and sulk in your solitude, or celebrate your partner even though that should be every day? 12:00am on January 1, of a new calendar year that will not do or shape anything in your life? Unless you own a gym, then I’m sure new years is your favourite time of year, and I’ll give you that one.
Rigid and cold.. maybe. But kind of freeing if you think about it. Why should we feel it is the norm to conform to the money-making societal holidays which are majorly just a marketing scheme? I stopped celebrating pretty much every holiday about a year ago, when I realized all they did was make me extremely stressed and put pressure on me to “buy so and so the perfect gift”/”have a memorable day”/”don’t be alone this day”/”make it better than the last”/”get at least one nice present”. When none of these things happen you get so down on yourself that you’ve just put a perfectly beautiful day of life to waste by sulking in expectation. Expectation = disappointment. No expectations = no disappointments.

Does this mean that I don’t celebrate anything and I just sit there emotion-less 365 days a year? Of course not. I believe in celebrating life every day, whether that be doing something you really love, yet rarely let yourself do (amusement park, spa day, driving out to nature), or being with family any day of the year and treating it as a holiday. Start doing the things you would normally do on a holiday- every day. Life is a gift, and you don’t need society to tell you when you should celebrate that.

This is exactly why I started putting more passion into my every day outfits. I enjoy fashion, I love creating an image for the day that is likely a 360 from yesterday’s, so why am I wearing jeans and a t-shirt? I don’t want to be, so why am I? Celebrating my passion (for fashion, haha), has made me so much more of a joyous and celebratory person than I was when I would “save the good outfit for the special occasion”. When you treat everyday like a special, beautiful fresh start, it’s like your birthday, valentine’s day, and new years never ends.
