Snowed In

When I was little, December signalled the chance of an elusive ‘snow day’, when the skies and ground turned white, school closed its doors for the day and there was nothing to do but scoot down any hill you could find on just about any thing that served as a sleigh. This was without doubt the best day of the year when you’re under the age of ten.

And even now we’re all grown-up, the idea of being snowed in, for a little while at least, is still pretty great. Although now of course the tobogganing would be fuelled by hot toddies and the concept of ‘bath time’ is far more appealing. If you’re a workaholic or self-employed (guilty on both accounts), often the only time you can truly envisage properly switching off is at Christmas when you know everyone else is doing the same. And all of us who fit into the above categories secretly dream of being cut off from the real world for a day or two through no fault of our own, so there’s nothing to do but kick back, cancel meetings and indulge. Of course, I’m envisaging this happening somewhere cosy, warm and well-stocked, and wouldn’t wish any alternative version of this fantasy on anyone!

But even if we don’t get any actual snow days that hold us hostage from work, we can always self-impose some on ourselves. Scented candles (these Mail Goetz Tobacco and Dark Rum candles are my current faves), thick socks, frosted windows, well-thumbed books and pots of freshly brewed ginger tea are all part of the ultimate duvet day that we all deserve once in a while.
