My little girl was off to kindergarten this year, which meant uniforms in khaki and navy and none of her pretty handmade dresses and ruffle pants and tops! It kind of breaks my mama-made heart, but it just makes me sew for my little guy more now. So when I was asked to be a part of the Riley Blake Back to School Blog Tour, I had to think a little bit about what I would dream about her wearing to school.
I’ve been on a navy kick lately, and I wanted to mix it up a little. I chose to sew with the Wiltshire Daisy line, designed by Carina Gardner, and some knit basics from Riley Blake. I love the shabby chic, vintage feel of Carina’s line and that I could embellish with lace and buttons and ruffles. I also love that the main print for the skirt on this dress is called “Cheater.” All of the amazing prints of a patchwork with the ease of a regular woven fabric! I used the following prints from Wiltshire Daisy-
- Wiltshire Cheater Blue
- Wiltshire Stripe Yellow
- Wiltshire Petals Yellow
I mixed in some Riley Blake knits with white and gray solids, as well as their small gray dot, which I’m kind of in love with!
I love our new Charly tunic pattern as is, but I really wanted to make it girly and add some length to that gorgeous high-low hemline. I added a 4″ ruffle strip to the hem and topped it with some delicate Cluny lace. As a dress, it’s not super twirly, so it’s not a fabric hog, but it is roomy enough for the playground or PE. I also added a strip of fabric to the bodice, just to have a place for more lace. Because you can never have enough, right? Charly also comes with a long sleeve option if you are experiencing fall weather already in your neck of the woods!
I paired this dress with our the Ruffled Capris from our Polly’s Playclothes Pattern booklet. I added a second ruffle to the pants and really love the contrast of the white against the gray. Of course, you can’t go wrong with the comfort of Riley Blake knits! They are easy to sew with and just as easy to wear!
The last item I made as the icing to the top of this ruffly fabric cake is the Sweet Grace Ruffled Headband. These are a staple in our house as my girl still sports some fine, baby whispy hairs around her face. If you have to wear a headband, might as well have one that matches, right? These are super fast to make and with the Wiltshire Daisy Cheater print, you could really play up the layers of ruffles, or keep it simple with one ruffle and still have a fabulous accessory.
