Children’s Books Roundup
We seem to have read so many new children’s books since the new year – some that we have been sent and some that the children have discovered through the local charity shops and the library. I thought I’d share their favourite ones here.
The team at Child’s Play sent us some books last week and Cat’s Colours by Airlie Anderson has been a very big hit here. Mr D has reached for this so many times already. It is a really lovely simple story and it’s great for Miss E who is just beginning to reliably recognise her colours. The illustrations are truly lovely and I love how the colours just pop up from the grey. A lovely lovely book to introduce colours with. We have also been looking at a book called Colours Colours Everywhere which both the children are really taken with. This one is a very tactile book and as well as pointing out the colours it’s great for extending Miss E’s vocabulary as she tells me the various pictures and what they are.
We have also enjoyed looking at two books from Tiny Owl. I’ve written before about Tiny Owl and I love the style of their books and I’m keen to bring a diverse set of books into our everyday reading. The Snowman and the Sun is a book that introduces ideas about the water cycle and evaporation. It is done in a really nice way and it prompted some nice conversations with Mr D about the snow that had melted from our garden a few weeks ago. I’m sure we will return to this book time and time again. There’s a lot going on in the pictures too which Miss E enjoyed very much! Look out for the Bee and the Cat.
The Orange House has another lovely message to deliver to young children; one of friendship. It also explores the importance of standing up for others. The Orange House is an old house that faces being demolished. It’s lovely to see the others houses protect the Orange House and it’s a gentle way to talk to young children about friendships and protecting those we care about.
Another two lovely books we were sent from Child’s Play is the lovely Little Home Bird which is a wonderful book for introducing the idea of migration to young children. The book is just so beautifully illustrated and Mr D in particular has enjoyed this one, and I have seen him reading this to his monkey and fox toys this week. The illustrations are beautiful and there is so much to explore in each picture. We have also been looking at a book called ‘And then…‘ this is about a little girl who has a new baby brother. This is a bit of a quirky, nonsense style book and it’s not an easy one to read (at least I didn’t find it easy to read!) and the children weren’t especially taken with it unfortunately.
Our frequent library visits has seen us explore a whole range of Elmer books. We have the original Elmer book at home and I picked up Elmer in the Snow a few weeks ago from a charity shop. Our library has a good number of Elmer Books so the children are keen to bring these home each week. Mr D and I made our own Elmer’s this week using this template from Twinkl. I love the message that the Elmer stories deliver and I think we might make another Elmer using different materials soon (when I get chance to cut up some fabric squares!).
