Do you ever feel like being a tourist in the city you live in? After moving back to Minneapolis a year ago, I feel like I really didn't "know" the city I lived in, the sights to see, the restaurants to eat at, the hidden gems that makes Minneapolis so special. Lately, I have been doing a lot more exploring, and experiencing the parts of the city that make Minneapolis so unique. Are you planning a weekend trip to Minneapolis or live in Minneapolis and want a little "staycation"? Below are 10 things to see and do in the City of Lakes.
Minnehaha Falls
Minnehaha Falls Regional Park in South Minneapolis is a great place to go and spend the afternoon walking the trails, venturing to the famous waterfall or having lunch at the Sea Salt Eatery.
Summer Sunrise at Lake Calhoun
The sunrises at Lake Calhoun are a must see. Grab a coffee at a nearby coffee shop and head on over to take in the morning colors. There are so many great places to capture photos of the downtown Minneapolis skyline from the west side of the lake, like the one above.
Foshay Tower
The Foshay Tower, now converted into the W Minneapolis Hotel, has a great museum and observation deck located on the 30th floor. This is a great place to learn some history of the building as well as Minneapolis. After taking in some history, head up the stairs to the observation deck and take in the breathtaking views of the downtown skyline and beyond.
Lake Harriet is a part of the Chain of Lakes in Minneapolis. It is a great place to take a walk or a bike ride along the many paths around the Lake as well as grab lunch at Bread and Pickle or enjoy an evening concert or movie.
"Cherry in the Spoon" Minneapolis Sculpture Garden
The Walker Art Museum is a contemporary art museum and is a part of the great art scene in Minneapolis. It is a great place to spend a weekend morning or afternoon. At your visit, make sure to venture across the street to the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden featuring the famous "Cherry in the Spoon."
"Yellow Room" Guthrie Theater
The Guthrie Theater is a great place to take in a Broadway show, but did you know it also has great views of the Mississippi River and the Stone Arch Bridge? Take a walk down the "Endless Bridge" to the outside observation area, or head to the Yellow Room on the 9th Floor for sweeping landscape views.
View of Downtown Minneapolis from Stone Arch Bridge
The Stone Arch Bridge is one of the oldest and most famous bridges in Minneapolis. It spans across the Mississippi River and connects downtown Minneapolis with St. Anthony Main in Northeast Minneapolis. Take in the great city views via walking or biking, and make sure to bring your camera as this is a great place to capture photos of the downtown Minneapolis skyline!
Downtown Minneapolis
Meet Minneapolis has many city tours to offer those interested in seeing the city in a different way or learning more about the history of the city. See the city by bus, walking or even on a segway. There are great food tours as well as a wine tour and traveling tap tour! Such a fun way to spend an afternoon in Minneapolis!
Spoon and Stable
Did you know that Minneapolis has one of the best food scenes in the country? There are so many great restaurants with various kinds of cuisine and new ones popping up all of the time. One of the best and highly rated is Spoon and Stable located in the North Loop section of Minneapolis. Make reservations early as this place fills up fast!
Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins
Minneapolis is a great place to watch a sporting event and is home to the Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Timberwolves, Minnesota Lynx and the University of Minnesota Division 1 sports teams.
Where to Stay:
Downtown Minneapolis has many great and highly rated hotels such as the Loews Hotel, W Minneapolis, and the Hotel Ivy.
Getting around:
I recommend renting a car during your stay in Minneapolis. The city does have a public transportation system, but is more limited on the weekends.
How to get there:
Minneapolis is accessible via car, train, bus and airplane. Minneapolis St. Paul International airport is one of the best airports in the country and has thousands of flights daily.
Plan your next trip to Minneapolis here.
