FILM MONDAY BILLY THE KID

it's monday and i was crazy busy last week and was unable to post my film friday pick. however this movie deserves at least a week or two of props...it's jennifer venditti's debut film 'billy the kid.'

this film was made in the 90's, and is about adolescence and being an outsider. however i found the documentary to be one of the most straightforward portrayals of asberger's syndrome and one of the most honest portrayals of a coming-of-age story in recent film history. one reviewer called it the '
antidote to juno' which seems pretty accurate.

it doesn't look like the director set out to make a movie about a teenage boy with asbergers, she seemed to really like this kid billy, and his outlook on life. the movie introduces us to a lead character who is compelling, complex and likeable, and it's a wonderful study of how important it is to have well-drawn, complicated(not two-dimensional) characters in storytelling. it also has no overt agenda, which these days is rare for documentaries. watch it here: netflix or itunes. do yourself a favor and watch this lovely film.
