I have an affinity with food. To say I am a foodie is probably an understatement. Whenever I travel to new places, my favourite thing is to get out there and try all the local and traditional cuisines. And there's no better way to start a day full of exploring, adventuring, and more eating than with a massive tasty breakfast. The first meal of the day is done differently all across the world - sweet, savoury, spicy, hot, cold, yet all extremely delicious. Hungry yet?
Ah the traditional English fry up - also known as the miracle hangover cure. Full English breakfasts normally include eggs, bacon, sausage, baked beans, tomato, mushrooms, fried bread, black pudding, or bubble and squeak. This is accompanied by toast and a cup of tea or coffee. Irish, Scottish, and Welsh variants include white pudding, tattie scones, haggis, and laverbread respectively.
Traditional Shakshouka is a dish of eggs poached in a tomato sauce made of tomatoes, onions, capsicum, and sometimes chilli. It is often served with labne, and bread. YUM! It is originally a Tunisian dish, that has become extremely popular in neighbouring countries, and was introduced in Israel by Tunisian Jews.
This may be a somewhat controversial entry, as it isn't what you would necessarily call a 'traditional breakfast'. And contrary to popular belief not ALL Australians love vegemite (I do!), but most families will have a jar in the pantry at home. Popular vegemite toast pairings include, cheese (NOTE: everyone should have a cheesymite scroll once in their life!), tomato, avocado, and poached eggs. Delicious!
Mohinga is an extremely popular dish in Myanmar, so much so that it is considered the national dish. It's a rice/rice noodle and fish soup usually made of catfish, garlic, onions, lemongrass, ginger, and fish sauce. Street hawkers carry big pots of it around neighbourhoods on shoulder poles, and on the back of bikes.
I am a huge fan of Mexican food, so I can't wait to get my hands on a big breakfast of fried tortillas, topped with salsa or mole which is then further simmered down, served with a top of onions, avocado, and cheese. I can't take my eyes off this one!
Congee is a hugely popular breakfast option in many Asian countries including China, Japan, Indonesia, Philippines, and Thailand each with their own national variations. Congee is a rice porridge, made by cooking rice in water for extended periods of time. Popular toppings include eggs, tofu, spring onions, soy sauce, seafood, and diced meat.
Arepa are flatbread that are cut in half and served stuffed with toppings like a sandwich. Popular breakfast fillings in Venezuela include regional cheese variants with chicken, beef, pork, avocado, or black beans.
Moroccans sit down to the breakfasts of my dreams! Look at that spread. The typical Moroccan breakfast included copious amounts of mint tea, traditional Moroccan breads such as Msemen, Sfenj, or Harsha, accompanied by honey, and sweet jams. YUM!
Not ones for the savoury breakfast, much like myself, the French tend to stick to the sweet side for their breakfast. Common French breakfasts include a simple plain croissant or a pain au chocolat with a cafe au lait. This is a breakfast I could get used to!
