I don’t think I believe in New Year’s resolutions. Not believing in them, though, seems as cliché as announcing them at midnight or over a New Year’s Day brunch. What’s a girl with writer’s block to do? It’s January, damn it, I should be able to write about something New Years-y without feeling like a hack. (Oh, wait, a blog almost immediately equates to hack these days. Shit.)

An old friend told me their primary goal – apart from graduating from college – was to be married before 30. Honestly, I had a silent freak out. How is marriage a goal or achievement? Meeting someone and pledging to spend your life together is a happy, fortunate, even enviable circumstance…but did you really do anything? (Oh, crap, I’m almost 30. Should marriage really still freak me out this much?)

Then I told myself to shut the hell up. I judge a lot of people for a lot of things, but dreams should not be one of them.

Do whatever makes you happy. Set goals that you believe will push your life forward. Growing up all I wanted was to live in a city, make friends with open-minded people, and feel happy a majority of the time. Maybe my nuptially-inclined friends guffaw at those ideas. Maybe reaching them doesn’t mean I’ve accomplished anything at all.

Maybe I don’t care either way because I’m living how I’ve always wanted.

What matters is that we live as we choose and dream as we see fit. Surround yourself with people who support you (even if they don’t quite understand you) and laugh your way to the finish line.
