8 places to put your home office

Having a home office, even as small as a working table is a dream for most of us. Bringing to life the inspiring office we fantasize about seems to require some space we don’t have and a budget we can’t justify. However, not all hope is lost, as long as you think a little differently, starting by placing the desk beyond the bedroom. Let’s explore eight possible places to consider for your home office.

1. In someone else’s office/library

If there’s already an office space at home that you can join, don’t overlook the opportunity. The best situation would be if the place allows to work back to back or at a 90 degrees layout, as not to disturb or interrupt each other.

As long as you respect the rules and limits, there should be no problem about sharing the office. Additionally, consider using the space on the hours its empty and maximize your work efficiency.

2. Behind the sofa

The space behind (or beside) a sofa can often handle a narrow desk without making the living room look crowded. The secret is to go as narrow as possible and probably go the full length (or width) of the sofa, as not to section the sight.

3. On a wall

For everyone that mostly works on their laptop and only use their desk for inspiration boards and filing systems this would be a great choice. Pick a whole wall or a part of it to put everything you need while working. Add hooks/nails for hanging objects and small baskets if needed.

It is helpful to have the wall in front of you or on either side, so you can take a glance and access it whenever you like. If the wall is out of sight and far away you might end up not using it.

4. In a closet

This is a fun tip we read everywhere, which doesn’t usually make sense. In my logic, if you can afford turning a whole closet into an office, it means you have enough space to put your office elsewhere at home.

But when you only use a part of the closet, gathering its contents on the top part or half part vertically, then you can afford to use it as a minimal office. A small stool or ottoman that fits into the closet is key, so the doors can still be closed to keep everything out of sight when not using the office.

5. Furniture extension

The case shown is a brilliant example that actually has three functions (seating, storage and desk). You can think as alternatively as you like to adapt this in your space. It can be anything you can tuck into an empty corner, a hidden table or the arms of bigger furniture. Also, you can consider all rooms and surfaces, including kitchen, corridors, windows and the floor.

6. Tucked into a box

Depending on how creative you are and how much space you need to fit the contents of your office, this concept can be pretty diverse. A box, a basket, an ottoman, a chest and even a piece of larger furniture with storage can become your working station.

Best part about it is than you can put everything away when done, creating a clear work/fun visual division.

7. Under the stairs

I am the first one that laughs at this tip when I find it under a picture of a fancy office with custom-made shelving. But the real life scenarios usually feature a high and narrow staircase that leaves some oddly proportioned space underneath. So if you can barely fit a working surface and a chair/stool, don’t be discouraged. To prevent the space from looking cluttered, leave the floor free and only use the top part for storage.

8. Around columns

Exposed columns are a bummer when decorating your space, but they can be excellent for very specific functions. An office is one of them, as long as you keep the shelves and table narrow, with a monochromatic look and close to the column’s paint color. This way the office blends into the background and doesn’t emphasize the column’s “wrong” placement.
