Mother’s Day Afternoon Teas in London

Mother’s Day is fast approaching and, since every mum loves an afternoon tea whatever her style, I thought I could recommend a few places if you are up for some inspiration on where to go for that special day.

For Arty Mums: The Royal Academy

With the Royal Academy (RA) celebrating its 250-year anniversary this year, art-loving mums can take in one of the latest events or exhibitions with their afternoon tea this year. Specifically tailored for Mother’s Day, ( 9-11 March) in the elegant Keeper’s House restaurant, the RA is offering afternoon tea with a complimentary ‘Mum’s the word’ cocktail of rhubarb liqueur with vodka and fresh lemon topped with soda, plus entry to Charles I: King and Collector for £35. As well as the cocktail, mums can enjoy homemade finger sandwiches, a mini Turkish delight, passion fruit layer mousse, salted caramel and chocolate tart and a buttermilk scone served with Cornish clotted cream, Peyton and Byrne jam, and a choice of tea.

To book visit http://www.peytonandbyrne.co.uk/bookatable/ or call 020 7300 5881. Also available is a Friends of the RA membership which provides a year-round art experience including priority access to the New RA before it opens to the public; free unlimited entry to the exhibitions and much morewww.royalacademy.org.uk

For Stylish Mums: Maison Assouline on Piccadilly, a Gucci ‘must visit’ destination

Gucci, currently the world’s hottest fashion house, has nominated Maison Assouline as the number one ‘must visit’ destination in London, so if the Piccadilly bookseller is good enough for fashion’s hoi polloi, it’s surely worthy of a Mother’s Day visit. Housed in an incredibly handsome 1922 Lutyens-designed former bank, its fabulous Swans Bar and café is a bit of a hidden gem. Predictably, the chic afternoon tea choices include Moroccan mint tea with a homemade selection of traditional Arabic sweets and French tea with miniature éclairs and Fois Gras. For something even more indulgent, treat mum to Royal Fillet Tolstoy, ‘the world’s most exquisite smoked salmon’, fresh oysters or caviar. Prices from £25.

For Mum and Kids: Mod Pizza free in Leicester Square

For an alternative take on afternoon tea, MOD, the Portland, USA export is offering a free 11-inch MOD pizza for all mums on Mothers’ Day. With 47 toppings to choose from the DIY pizza bar and delicious homemade iced tea to drink, it’s a great place for a budget-friendly Mother’s Day date. www.modpizza.co.uk

For Shopaholics Mum: Fortnum & Mason

For mothers who love to shop, the food halls at 181 Piccadilly are a must and so is their signature Afternoon Tea which has been an institution for centuries. Served in the Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon, the Mother’s Day Exclusive Menu includes: a choice of tea blends, delicate finger sandwiches, Fortnum’s celebrated home baked scones served with cream, jam or curd and a selection of cakes including a rose choux bun, Gianduja (milk chocolate and hazelnut mousse) cake , orange blossom cake, white chocolate and rhubarb swiss roll, passionfruit and vanilla mousse. For Mother’s Day, the cakes will be beautifully presented on a plate decorated with flower petals. Available from 10th-11th March & 12th-13th May (for International Mother’s Day), prices from £49. On the Saturday prior to Mothering Sunday, Fortnums is also hosting a Children’s Cupcake Decorating workshop for 5-12yr olds where they can learn how to ice and decorate their own bespoke cake. Tickets for the hour-long session cost £25 and cover the cost of one child and an accompanying adult. www.fortnumandmason.com

For Hipster Mammas: cocktail inspired tea and a coloured perfume spa treat at the W London

For an inventive take on afternoon tea, W London’s expert mixologists have taken the cocktail experience to the next level by boldly pairing each cake with a version of one of their signature cocktails.

The ‘Tea Total’ uncovers playful pairings such as Rosemary & Chocolate Shortbread Cup with Mango Mousse and Liquorice Marshmallow indulgently married with the Black Forest Sour. Savouries include twists on traditional afternoon tea sandwiches including Smoked Salmon with Cream Cheese on Cranberry Bread and Roast Beef with Dijon Mayo on Onion Bread. Prices from £35 per person.

Perfect for a Mother’s Day pamper, the hotel also suggests treating mum to a Colour Perfume Therapy Massage treatment. This holistic sensory experience involves choosing one of the five Altearah Bio Perfume Colours to be used as part of a Therapy Massage. Prices start at £55 for 30 minutes. www.wlondon.co.uk

For the mum who loves the traditional: The Ritz

According to Helen Simpson, author of the London Ritz Book of Afternoon Tea,Tea at the Ritz is the last delicious morsel of Edwardian London. The light is kind, the cakes are frivolous and the tempo is calm, confident and leisurely.”

Especially for the 11th March, the Ritz has created a decadent version of Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea including a glass of Ritz Rose Champagne and an assortment of delicate finger sandwiches, French pastries and scones with jam and Cornish clotted cream. Plus, mums’ can choose from 18 varieties of loose-leaf tea from the tea menu, chosen by the hotel’s uniquely certified Tea Sommelier, Giandomenico Scanu, who travels around the world to source the best teas.
