American Symbols

What a quick short week it was! Who doesn't love 3 day weekends?! I was so excited for this week though because we learned all about American Symbols!! I just finished making this American Symbols Pack a little over a week ago and could't wait for my kiddos to get their hands on it! I really wanted them to get a good understanding of the different American symbols, the importance of the American Symbols, and also make it fun for them!
We had a blast learning about 6 American Symbols this week and made an interactive informational book to show all of our new learning! They were so excited to see what American symbol we were going to learn about next! Their excitement and hard work made this week so much fun!

Here is our American Symbols week in action!
Monday- No School

Tuesday
To kick off our week of American symbols, I read the story, 'America Is...' by Louise Borden. This is such an amazing book for younger students. The illustrations are beautiful and it does a great job at introducing our country and the pride of our country.

Then we found the state that we live in on the map of the United States. We had a lot of fun looking at the map and all of the different states. For the first page of our informational book, we showed the state that we live in. Then we colored a picture on the United States map and placed it on top of the state that we live in. They could lift up the map of the U.S. and see the state underneath.

The first American Symbol we learned about was the 'State of Liberty'. We read a nonfiction book about the Statue of Liberty and then did some interactive writing to make an anchor chart on some facts that we learned.

Next we worked on our informational books by writing some of our new learning about the 'Statue of Liberty'. We also added a picture of the Statue of Liberty to flip up on our writing.

We kept all of our writing pages in our 'project folders' (large piece of construction paper folded in half). This 'project folder' also turned into the cover of our informational book when we finished.

Wednesday
Today we learned all about the 'American Flag'. We read a nonfiction book about the American Flag and then did some interactive writing to make an anchor chart on some facts that we learned.

Next we worked on our informational books by writing some of our new learning about the 'American Flag'. We also added a picture of the American Flag to go on top of our writing.

Thursday
Today we learned all about the 'Liberty Bell'. We read a nonfiction book about the Liberty Bell and made an anchor chart with our new learning.

We added another page to our informational books by writing some of our new learning about the 'Liberty Bell'. We also added a picture of the Liberty Bell to flip up on our writing.

The next American Symbol we learned about was the 'White House'. I didn't have a book about the White House, so we used our American Symbols poster of the White House and some research on the internet to learn all about it! We had so much fun searching the internet and we even learned what floor the President sleeps on!! (Okay so maybe we started to get a little creepy!) We made an anchor chart with our new learning about the White House.

And we added another page to our informational books.

Friday
Today we learned all about the 'Bald Eagle'. We read a nonfiction book about the Bald Eagle and then made an interactive anchor chart on some facts that we learned.

We of course added another page to our informational books!

The last American symbol we learned was 'Mount Rushmore'.

And we finished the last page of our informational books! YAY!!

Now it was time to put all of their hard work together!! We organized all of the papers inside of our 'project folders' (large piece of construction paper folded in half). I stapled the project folder with the pages inside to turn it into a book. Then we decorated the cover of our books.

And here it is!! I am so proud of their wonderful and hard work!! They were also so proud of themselves too! I loved watching them go back through their books and read about the different American Symbols and talk to the other students at their tables about them.
