Simple Experiment with Light

A brilliant friend of mine shared this great idea on Facebook the other day, and I couldn’t wait to share it with you! She made a “starry night” for her two-year-old with everyday items we all have lying around our house.

All you need is a colander, flashlight, and a dark room. Stick your flashlight underneath the colander, and voila! The room is instantly filled with stars that will awe any toddler or preschooler!

Let them experiment with what happens when they put their hand over the holes. What about when they rotate the colander? Or lift it up further away from the light? It’s a great way to explore light, darkness, and shadows in a fun way.
