5 Ways to Treat Dry Winter Skin

Besides the cold mornings, oversized puffy coats, and freezing commutes to work, the worst part of winter for me is how uncomfortably dry my skin always gets. From my legs to my cheeks, my skin loses so much moisture in the winter (and pale skin doesn’t help!). Thankfully, there are a few simple solutions to this winter skin dilemma, and they actually work.

1. Choose the right moisturizer

While I love a good smelling lotion like coconut or vanilla, fragrance-free is the way to go when it comes to your winter moisturizer. Rather than a quick-fix lotion, you need a creamy moisturizer that actually locks in hydration. My latest obsession is Skinfix® Daily Lotion™, a long-term, effective solution to dry skin that’s made from natural ingredients. Skinfix has actually been around for a really long time (150 years!), but just recently made it’s way to the US and it’s available at Target. I highly recommend it all year round, but especially in the winter.

2. Avoid harsh toners & masks

Skip the toners and pore minimizing masks in the wintertime. If you want to apply a mask, opt for a hydrating or multi-vitamin solution that won’t dry out your skin. As for toners, I’d skip them all together this time of year as they can really suck out the moisture from your skin.

3. Use warm, not hot water

While a hot shower feels pretty amazing during this freezing cold weather, try to lower the temperature a bit as super hot water can dry out your skin even more. I suggest starting and ending your shower with a quick 30 seconds of hot water to warm you up, but lower the temps for the majority of the time.

4. Skip the powders

I’ve mentioned this before in my Makeup for Dry Skin post, but it really does make a difference. Skip the powder makeup during the winter and opt for liquids instead, like cream blushes and BB creams. I’m a huge fan of bareMinerals new Complexion Rescue. It’s super hydrating and helps improve your complexion over time. Just apply it after our moisturizer and add a touch of cream blush.

5. Vitamin E tablets

My secret solution that I’ve been using since high school? Vitamin E tablets. Just get a bottle from your local drugstore, stick a needle or safety pin into a tablet and squeeze the vitamin E gel onto your finger. Apply it to those extra dry patches on your face (I tend to get them around my eyes and nose), as well as your lips. It seriously works wonders!
