Making the most of your available light.

Light is everything when it comes to photography.

Unusual lighting can transform a normal everyday scene into something spectacular if captured correctly. And I say that lightly, as there are no real rules when it comes to photography, apart from one – which I learnt from none other than Tyra Banks: Find your light.

And with that in mind, how you play with shadows can be just as important as the light itself.

Dublin, and Ireland in general is often overcast – which gives you this beautiful soft diffused lighting, which can be very flattering. But strong direct sunlight gives you really dramatic shadows to play around with which can give you something totally different.

In this case on my last day in Dallas the sun was directly above my head which created the most beautiful strong shadows that resembled a cage and the minute I laid my eyes on this little garden terrace above the city I knew I had to shoot there.

Remember: Interesting shadows make for interesting photos.

With light and shadows like this, it can be a little tricky to get typical shots to show your outfit head to toe. But I didn’t mind in this instance, I just thought the light was so unusual and striking I wanted to embrace it and let the light be the hero of this shoot.

While we were shooting this a cloud would come along every once in a while and block the sun temporarily – which then transformed this whole area and made it look like a totally different place in photographs. It’s incredible really, just how much of a difference it makes. I wanted to keep the consistency so there were a few pauses which luckily wasn’t a problem as I wasn’t in any hurry at the time. So give yourself time and be patient, it will be worth it!

Good light is always worth waiting for : )
