Paint A Crankenstein
To learn how to paint a Crankenstein, you must first read Samantha Berger’s book on how you might spot such a creature, and how they come to be. It’s an adorable look at cranky kids, and all the things that turn them into cranky little monsters. I was inspired by the cover, which has a close cropped head and very glaring eyes. I’ve found that starting portrait drawings with a large “U” touching the top of the paper, is much easier for young ones, instead of the usual oval shape. And it forces them to draw large, which is always helpful in so many ways.
MATERIALS
• Crankenstein, by Samantha Berger
• Multimedia paper
• Sharpie marker, black, chisel tip
• Liquid watercolor paper
DIRECTIONS
1. Read the book Crankenstein, and note all the way you can see this little boy’s cranky emotions.
2. With a landscape orientation, draw a large “U” that is connected to the top of the paper. Draw shoulders and ears, and then start the face with the half circle eyes, the zig zag bangs, and the rest of the face.
3. Trace the drawing with the marker, and then fill in the black shapes.
4. Paint the face with light green for the monster effect.
5. Paint the body and background as desired.
