Watercolor Terrarium

This is one of my favorite spring painting projects. I save it every year for kinders, and their introduction to learning about plants.

1. Each student starts with a letter-size jar template cut from chipboard. They trace it in pencil on a 9″ x 12″ sheet of watercolor paper, then added a lid line and ground line. Flowers were added above the ground line. 2. A white crayon was used to draw roots under each stem, pressing heavily for maximum impact. The jar and ground line were also traced with a crayon, and flowers were colored and filled in. 3. Liquid watercolors were used to finish the art. They were given brown to paint the dirt, but were allowed any other color for the jar and background. It helps to limit the very young to just 3 paint colors so the jar drawing does not get lost.
