Fashion Friday: Baby Gear Meets the Fine Arts

Art School

Baby gear brands get a lesson in the fine arts. By Angela Velasquez

Andy Warhol may have famously declared his love for boring things, but I bet that even the pop culture enthusiast and artist would have loved the new and creative baby gear hitting store shelves. From prints pulled from Warhol’s archive to today’s leading fashion designers and innovators dipping their toes into the children’s category, a bright and funky selection of strollers and diapers bags are carving a colorful niche sure to catch the eye of art and design enthusiasts—who are also new parents. Check out this curated selection of some of the finest examples of this art movement.

Pop Art

Few things have outlasted its 15 minutes of fame as long as Andy Warhol’s iconic prints have. From retro T-shirts and snappy home décor to limited edition must-haves such as Alien Workshop’s Warhol-inspired skateboard decks, the artist has changed the way the world looks at soup cans and blonde bombshells by becoming part of everyday life. And now babies can be introduced to the artist’s screen prints from day one by way of baby gear brand, Bugaboo. The limited edition Andy Warhol Bugaboo collection features the artist’s famous red flower and graphic car prints on the canopies of some of the brand’s most popular stroller styles including the Bugaboo Bee, Bugaboo Cameleon3 and the Bugaboo Donkey. An electric blue flower parasol for strollers is also available. The collection is in stores now, but only for six months.

In the Bag

Best known for his simplistic yet quirky pottery and his eye for unique color combinations, furniture and homeware designer Jonathan Adler is expanding his retro cool lifestyle brand down to fashion for chic mamas. Along with bringing his original prints and designs to everyday essentials such as iPhone cases, stationary and socks (created by BabyLegs global licensee and distributor, United Legwear Co.), the New Yorker has linked up with Skip Hop to create a bold and graphic collection of diaper bags. The Skip Hop Jonathan Adler collection includes lightweight totes kitted out with insulated pockets for bottles, adjustable stroller straps and easy to clean laminated materials in three of Adler’s signature prints, as well as the Pronto, an on-the-go changing station to store wipes, diapers and creams. And with prints that span black and white geometric squares to trendy Chevron designs, there’s something for everyone.

Food for Thought

Fashion designer Jeremy Scott’s designs have been called a lot of things: whimsical, crazy, avant-garde, controversial. His sneaker collaboration with Adidas Originals has introduced zany plush toys to the streets and his eponymous clothing line dresses men and women as comic book characters one season and in cow prints another. And now, thanks to his collaboration with German baby gear brand, Cybex, you can add delicious to that list. The joint project includes a collection of strollers, car seats and accessories done up in an exclusive Jeremy Scott-designed print. Inspired by his own childhood, Scott created a pop art “Food Fight” print for the products, featuring popcorn characters taking on burgers and soda bottles duking it out with a hotdog. The one-of-a-kind line will be out in stores later this year.
