The British Pullman

Victoria Station, London

My belated 50th birthday celebration kicked off in fine fettle. As I traipsed through Victoria Station this military band stopped me dead in my tracks. I stood for a moment and struggled to hold back the tears, I'm one of those ridiculously sensitive souls and I felt all puffy, sentimental and grateful that Scotland is still part of Great Britain.
I turned to my husband and said: "I've a tear in my eye. I'm really moved." Thankfully he said that he felt quite choked too.
We were about to embark on the trip of a lifetime onboard the fabled Orient Express. The grande dame resides on the other side of the channel but carrying us towards our romantic rendezvous was the classic British Pullman. This is all part of the Orient Express experience. As cliched as it may be the excitement as we gathered in the waiting room was palpable. We may have started off as strangers but soon we would be carousing and toasting in the bar car as the beauty of Europe flashed by our windows as if seen through the view finders of our childhood. Did anyone else have that one with Captain Nemo and the writhing octopus? - I still have nightmares about it.

That's my navy Globe- Trotter suitcase waiting to go on the journey of its dreams, thankfully it didn't burst with excitement.

As we hurtled through England's green and pleasant land and passed the white cliffs of Dover, we sat down to a brunch consisting of Bellinis, caviar, mushrooms, scrambled eggs & smoked salmon, the pudding now escapes me.
This cheery jazz quartet greeted our arrival at Folkestone and our imminent introduction to the world's most glamorous iron maiden.
*remember folks, the train was moving and it's just the little old iPhone, that's why the pics are so awful.
