Extra Virgin Coconut Oil As A Hair Treatment

Extra virgin coconut oil has been rather popular and getting quite a bit of publicity lately. Just do a search on “coconut oil uses” and you’ll be inundated with links to the many benefits of using coconut oil in your diet and your beauty routine.

When I was in university, one of my housemates taught me how to use olive oil as a hair treatment. I used to do it on a weekly basis but completely discarded the routine when I returned back home.

Since coconut oil has made a comeback, I went out to several local organic shops and came across this jar at BMS Organics. I got an edible one that can be used in cooking as well as a health supplement. And if it’s good enough to eat, it’s going to be good enough for your hair.

I just take 2 tablespoons of the coconut oil and spread it on my dry hair, concentrating on the ends. I also use some to massage my scalp. Once your hair is all soaked in oil, wrap it up under a shower cap and leave on for at least 30 minutes (or more if you have the time). You can warm the oil slightly by blitzing in the microwave for 10 seconds but I’m not usually bothered.

When the shower cap is removed, your hair will be very, very oily and smelling like coconuts. But I love the smell of coconuts, so it doesn’t bother me. Take a shower and wash your hair as per normal. If there is still an oily residue left, shampoo twice if you want a completely squeaky clean head. I don’t use a conditioner but you can if your hair is very dry.

Blow dry or air dry your hair. You may not see an immediate difference because it really depends on how dry or damaged your hair is. If you continue with this treatment, I’m quite sure you will start experiencing an improvement.

I don’t do this treatment as regularly as I should because it is messy and time-consuming. I tend to do it every two weeks or so but if you are looking for a cheap and natural alternative to improving the state of your hair, I’d highly recommend doing this at least once a week.

There are many other health benefits to using coconut oil. I won’t cover them here because there are loads of useful and more scientific articles available that I’m sure you’ll be able to learn more.

Have you tried a natural, oily treatment for your hair? What do you normally use? Drop in and share your thoughts.
