Costume SuperCenter’s New Costumes and Mesmerizing Mermaid Costume Review

I received a free costume in exchange for my honest opinions.

I absolutely love any excuse to dress up in a costume. I go all out at Halloween, but why should I only get to throw on a costume one time a year? This year I decided I wanted to add something a little extra special for my baby girl’s Under The Sea 2nd Birthday party. I decided to dress up as a “real life” mermaid for the kids, and my costume was such a big hit! It was so much fun to take photos with all the little girls. The best part was even though all the kids know me as Aubrey’s mom, they all thought I had been transformed into a real mermaid for the party!

I spent a couple hours searching for the perfect mermaid costume. I wanted something that would be really sparkly but not over the top for a children’s party. The guests ranged in age from 1-7, so I wasn’t looking for a super expensive over the top costume. Costume SuperCenter always has a ton of new costumes to choose from, so I decided on the Mesmerizing Mermaid Adult Costume.

The Mesmerizing Mermaid costume comes with a halter top and skirt made to look like a mermaid tail. I thought the skirt looked like it would fit loosely and allow me to walk without feeling constricted. I took my measurements and ordered a size S. When the costume arrived I couldn’t wait to try it on.

The Pros:

The price tag wasn’t a budget buster. I’ve looked at many mermaid costumes, and most were over $50. The Mesmerizing Mermaid Adult Costume has a price tag of $39.99, and is well made. I’ve seen many higher priced costumes that are of a much lower quality. Overall the costume fit great and was sized appropriately. The skirt was beautiful, and everyone at the party commented on how the sequins sparkled so well in the sunlight.

The skirt was also very lightweight and wasn’t confining at all. Our party was outside on a beautiful but sunny day with temps in the low 90s, yet the costume was very comfortable to wear in the heat. I could move around comfortably as if I was wearing any skirt from my wardrobe instead of feeling like I was tightly fit into a mermaid tail. That was a definite plus, and I will absolutely have to wear the skirt again for future costume parties, etc.

The Cons:

I found the material to be fairly itchy because there was no liner behind the sequined fabric. I solved the problem by wearing a pair of leggings under the skirt. The halter top was also much too revealing for my taste, and it definitely wasn’t appropriate for a family friendly event. Let’s just say more was hanging out than was covered! I put the halter on with a tube top underneath while I was setting up for the party, but I eventually ditched it in favor of my bikini top instead. It would be nice if the top and bottom could be purchased separately for a more appropriate sizing.

Setting up the party food in my Mermaid costume. It was comfortable enough to wear all day!

Lastly, I had an issue with the waistband on the skirt. There was no elastic, no zipper, no button, and the fabric is not stretchy at all. This posed a problem when trying to pull the skirt over my hips, and I came very close to ripping the seam. I tried pulling the skirt down over my head, and I had the same issue with my chest. The Mesmerizing Mermaid costume fit me appropriately on my waist and hips, but my hips are not the same size as my waist. Either the waistband needs to be elastic, or there needs to be some type of zipper/snap/button closure. If purchasing this costume I would suggest ordering a size larger to accommodate this, but the skirt will fit a little looser in the hips and legs.

Even though there were a few cons, overall I was pleased with the Mesmerizing Mermaid costume, and I would purchase it again for the mermaid tail skirt. If you would like to discover more about Costume SuperCenter or if you love what they carry check out their page and like CSC on Facebook. There are many beautiful costumes for all ages and all types of characters on the website. I’m already making a list of costumes that I must add to my girls’ dress up box and Halloween attire!
