Up until a few months ago you couldn’t find a bigger New York Sports Club fan than myself. In my very young career when I was making pennies, NYSC was my dream gym. All the fancy equipments, free towels and TVs. (Individual TVs on cardio equipment was unheard of back then!)
A year before I got married I was determined to drop 25 pounds before the big day. I had found a new job (my current place of employment) and had a little more coin in my pocket. I signed the contract and never looked back since. I totally lost the 25 pounds and more, my pre marriage weight has always been my lowest weight.
I have gotten married as a member of that gym, discovered and fell in love with spinning, taken some of the hardest bootcamp classes and exercised with both pregnancies there. I even learned to lift weights there. I’ve made so many friends, bonded with so many group exercise instructors and been on a first name basis with countless staff.
Well the writing was on the wall in March. They tried to compete with local no frill gyms like Blink Fitness and Planet Fitness by offering a low $19.99 rate to use the facility with no towels and no classes.
I knew that would work for me because I need my spin and I need my Bodypump. These are two classes I can barely live without. Since classes weren’t a part of the deal I just kept it moving paying an astronomical $90 a month for my gym membership.
At the beginning of May they announced that all members would have access to classes. Yes those paying $90 and those paying $19.99. So I did what was logical–I inquired about changing my membership so I could pay the lower rate. Turns out I would have to pay a hefty down payment and an annual fee (which I never did before).
There was also a new class signup process that has resulted in a lot of cranky gym goers during their lunch break. When my spin class was delayed 10 minutes because of a “signup dispute” I knew I couldn’t do this anymore. I get a limited amount of time during my lunch hour to workout and I have no time for nonsense.
With the really nice weather I have decided to end my New York Sports Club membership effective June. I’ve decided to get the very popular classpass that allows me to take advantage of a wide range of fitness classes all over the city. I am also working with Blink Fitness in an upcoming campaign so I will have access to a treadmill for my marathon training.
Who knows–I might find myself back at NYSC when it gets a bit harder to travel to classes in the winter…but for right now it’s time for our relationship to take a break!
