Opposites attract: summer 2014's black and white trend

Much like artisanal beer, hot yoga, and Macklemore, color is overrated, especially when you consider just how far fashion can go using just the two most basic hues — black and white.
Pure and striking minimalist opposites that they are, black and white are a winning combo season-to-season, but they'r eespecially big right now, with summer 2014 awash in high-impact monochromes.

Manicures, accessories and designer runway collections are all going graphic and tonal, with black-on-white looks for summer 2014. Among some of the interpretations are linear elements, with several designers, like Ralph Lauren and Bergdorf Goodman favoring thick black stripes against crisp white.

We're digging this effect, especially when used in diagonals and Vs, as in Ark & Co's new Back Cutout Dress, which just arrived at the shop.
But Ark & Co is also working the black and white trend in another way that's big on designer runways this summer. Houses like Diane Von Furstenberg know the visual power of a good black and white graphic print, and have been using it to advantage this season.
Likewise, Ark & Co's Back Cross Cami Dress makes an impact with a bold yet mod meander style graphic print that holds all the fascination of an optical illusion.

The upswing of this whole black and white trend is that, as it tends to play more with texture and lines rather than color, it's pretty much suited to everybody and every skin tone. Not to mention it's got a total day-to-night aspect built right into it.
If, like us, you're falling for this look like so many wobbly dominoes, you can check out Ark & Co's renditions of the trend, as well as a few other black and white styles, at the Buzz Jeans shop. Because, you know, color is so last summer.
